Synopsis

A Taylor Made Student

A tutor that desperately wants to teach and a student that eagerly wants to learn. Off into the shadows she follows…

After 2 years of running from her brutal past, Kiera Fox is now ready to start her life over. When she decides to finish her degree at the Essex University, the last thing she was expecting was to meet the handsome and intimidating Taylor Holloway.

A brief encounter in the court yard ignites a searing desire inside of Kiera which she longs to act upon. When she takes that plunge she is surprised to learn that Taylor is her Art tutor.

Giving in to the overwhelming longing for one another, Kiera embarks on a dark journey of submission to Taylor, guiding her into a world beyond just sex. He teachers her about dominance and submission, control and discipline, pain and pleasure, but this path is a little too familiar for Kiera. Bringing up too many raw memories she’s isn’t quite ready to face, but she can no longer run as her past has now found her.

Whilst struggling to come to terms with her past, a new threat is boiling in the background. Dragging up old war wounds and dangerous secrets, Kiera soon learns she isn’t the only one hiding secrets. Although the threats warn about revealing the affair, Kiera feels it’s not just about exposing them, this is personal.

Can their relationship remain in the shadows along with their secrets? And how far will Taylor push Kiera in surrendering her will to his dark world, without breaking her?

excerpt

A Taylor Made Student

“I’m not going to blindfold you this time. I want to see those beautiful green eyes of yours.” His eyes locked onto mine. “You have the most beautiful eyes, Kiera. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such bright green eyes before in my life.” I felt my clitoris swell. How can someone have me on the edge of a climax by only his words alone? My breath was shallow, and my heart pounded at my ribcage. I was ready, floating like a cloud, sensing the static electricity brewing from the storm on its way.

In my drug-like state, I hadn’t noticed Taylor pick up the Cat o’ nine and move behind me, until I heard a rush of air from behind, and then a stinging sensation across my shoulders from the cat o’ nine coming down hard on my flesh. I flinched, and groaned loudly, my breasts swelled, and my nipples grew hard, and this was only the beginning. Three more slaps came down hard on my flesh, one across my lower back, one on my buttocks, and one across the back of my thighs, each hit harder and faster than the one before.

My insides were singing with delight, but on the outside my flesh was on fire. Taylor’s hands caressed over the areas affected from his brutal punishment on my body. This was repeated several more times. Three hits, each impact harder than before, across my back, my breasts, my buttocks, and several times against my pussy. Then the tender caress of Taylor’s hand over the inflamed areas, causing my sex to clench tight until my inner storm brewed to a point beyond any control, convulsing my body into the sweet surrender of my exploding orgasm, which rolled slowly down the inside of my thigh. My breath burned my throat and my flesh tingled, highly responsive to Taylor’s wicked torture on my mind, body and soul.

I started to laugh so wickedly with pure delight and exhaustion. He brought the leather braids down once more on my sensitive skin, stopping me from laughing, replacing it with a scream of pain. Showing me he was in control. He hands caressed over my buttocks until his fingers skated over the folds of my hypersensitive pussy, smearing my juices. “Hmm, so wet. So you like the Cat-o-nine, then?” he hummed, and slid one finger inside me, and I gasped at the delicious feeling. But only for a few short seconds did I get to enjoy that feeling, before he quickly withdrew his fingers. Tease.

“Fuck, Kiera. I don’t think I’ve ever been this hard in my whole life,” Taylor hissed.

My body sagged into the restraints on my cuffed wrists, hanging from the chains above me as my legs could no longer hold the weight of my own body. Slowly returning back to Earth out of subspace. Taylor’s hands snaked around my waist, clutched my body close to his, and unhooked the chain from the cuffs. He then removed the spreader bar from my ankles, unbuckled the leather cuffs from my wrists, and carried me over to the end of the bed, placing me gently onto my stomach. My tummy pressed gently down on the cool, soft, black sheets, whilst my legs were kneeling on the carpeted floor.

Taylor placed himself, kneeling, between my legs, pushing my legs wider for him. He rested one strong hand on my inner thigh, and slowly glided it up to my tingling sex, teasing his fingers over my clitoris, then gliding them down across my wet folds once more. “Hmm, you have the sweetest little pussy, Miss Fox.” He murmured at my ear with that breathy, throaty, deep voice of his. I loved the sound of his voice when he was aroused. So masculine and domineering. He could ask me to rob at bank in that voice, and I wouldn’t think twice about obeying his request. He slid two fingers repeatedly in and out of my sex, whilst his thumb pressed down hard on my clit. The feeling of another orgasm concocting in my loins. “Do you like that, Kiera?”

“Yes, sir,” I said in barely a whisper.

“Do you want me to make you come?”

“Yes.”

“What was that?” he said dryly.

“Yes, Yes please! I want to come so badly! Please, sir!” I begged.

“Good girl.” His fingers were torturing me, and my body begged for release. My fingers curled at the sheets beneath me into tight fists. I bit down so hard on my lip that I caught the taste of blood on my tongue. Thrusting his fingers deeper into me, and pushing down hard on my clit when my body shuddered violently, surrendering to his magnificent fingers. “Taylor!” I screamed, and I came all over his hand.

“Oh God, I have to fuck you. Hard. Now.” He groaned, and before I’d had time to catch my breath after my orgasm, he’d unzipped his jeans, kicked them off his legs, and pushed his hard, rigid cock into my wet and still trembling pussy. He wrapped my ponytail around his wrist, and yanked my head back hard, arching my spine and restricting my airway somewhat, so that I could barely breath, and the thought started to scare me, but not to the point of panic.

I hissed through gritted teeth, trying to breathe, as Taylor continued to pound hard into me and pull back further on my hair. Growing harder and bigger every time, pushing every single inch of himself inside me. “Fuck, yes. Come for me, Kiera,” he demanded, plunging further and quickening the pace. My body shuddered once more, and I let out a loud, hissing sigh and, just as my body came down from its higher state of consciousness, I heard Taylor groan, “God, you feel so good.” He drove one last pain-splitting time into my pussy, hissing my name, when his body began to shake as he reached his own climax, spilling his warm, creamy goodness inside me.

Slick with sweat, and completely exhausted, Taylor collapsed on top of me, and we stayed in that position for a good few minutes until the convulsions of our bodies had finally subsided. Then Taylor pulled my limp body up onto the bed with him, spooning me from behind, and snaked one arm around my waist to pull me in close against his hot sticky body.

“I have never seen someone so responsive and receptive to that sort of torture before,” he said, still trying to catch his breath. He kissed my hair. “You looked so beautiful restrained in those chains, hanging from my ceiling.” I was so exhausted; I couldn’t manage to form any energy to speak. “Get some rest, little one, and when you wake up, I’ll address your wounds, and then I’ll cook us something to eat.” That was the last thing I heard from Taylor as my body gave way to exhaustion, and the room turned black.

Synopsis

A Taylor Made Master

Kiera Fox is the secretly proud submissive to Dominant sex god Taylor Holloway. Taylor has taught her many things, both in the classroom and in the bedroom. In return Kiera has given herself willing to him, including the confession of her damaged past.

But as Kiera’s feelings continue to grow over time, she realizes Taylor is still very much an enigma; a man filled with secrets and lies. Breaking the one fundamental rule of complete honesty between a master and his submissive, Taylor is breaking her heart along with it. Their bodies may be closer than ever, but the secrets and the lies are testing their foundation.

As a growing danger pushes the boundaries of their trust and the emotional connection they have further apart, will Taylor let down his walls and finally let Kiera in? Or will this dark shadow in their relationship break them?

excerpt

A Taylor Made Master

It was beautiful; it was like something from a movie. No; it was like something from a fantasy. Taylor was, once again, back in his rightful place, towering over me, with his smooth, taut chest exposed, and wearing only a pair of tatty jeans sitting teasingly low on those chiselled V-shaped hips. The tiniest patch of dark hair trailed down his pelvis and into those jeans, and I traced my fingertips over it.

The flashing from the storm outside cast a momentary glare on Taylor’s body and handsome face, mocking me with only the slightest glimpse every now and then of his beauty. The rain tapped ceaselessly at the glass wall of Taylor’s bed room. It was deafening, but also music to my ears. It was calming, and erotic, even with the thunder rattling throughout the whole house.

Our relationship was like lightning; it was chemical and electric, and when a black shadow cast over us, the clouds would part, and a blinding light would shine through the crack. Taylor was my lightning, casting a path in the dark storm.

His fingers wrapped around my wrists as my palms lay flat upon his solid chest. I could feel the slowly increasing thump of his heart. I stood that little bit taller in my sexy, zebra print peep-toe spikes, bringing me that little bit closer to his face. I wore my matching black lace, zebra stripe thong and bra set, setting a scene that I was currently feeling inside me – I, Woman in the Wild, waiting for Taylor to claim me. The smooth, silky feeling of satin brushing between my thighs and around my swollen breasts felt incredible against my tingling flesh. I shivered, not from a chill, but from the lust and anticipation blossoming within me.

His dark penetrating eyes married with mine. He brushed my loose hair off my face and tucked it behind my ear. He stroked his hand down my neck, on to my shoulder and down the full length of my arm, then curled his fingers back round my wrist once more.

“I’ve missed this body. I love the feel of your soft skin beneath my fingers, the feel of your hair tangled within my fist, and I love you, Kiera. Every single part of you,” he whispered at my ear. I melted; I was a puddle of mush from the sound of those precious words leaving his mouth. “I know I’ve always said that I needed you, and that is still true, but honestly, I want you, Kiera. I want you in my life and to be with me. I can’t let you leave the university. We will find a way to get through this and be together.”

Carrie Anne Ward grew up in the seaside resort Clacton on sea in Essex, England, with her mum and two brothers until she was 16 years old. She then moved with her mother to Colchester (where she still lives to this day) and went on to study Art and Design at the Colchester institute. However, after recovering from the illness glandular fever, which meant she couldn’t finish her degree, she went out into the world to become a working class citizen and a glamour model on the side.

For many years she wrote stories in her spare time, mostly horrors or supernatural, but never felt the passion to take it further. Her love for literature at school didn’t, at that point, over take her love of Art, but as she grew older her passion in writing surpass any other desire she ever had.

Her passion for writing over the years grew excessively (mostly erotica) and when BDSM erotic books took the world by storm, she finally found the genre in which she wanted to write about. So being a real submissive, Carrie decided to take the experiences she has had and combined them with her imagination, to create a story. So at the age of 33 she fulfilled her dream to become a writer by releasing her debut novel A Taylor Made Student, the first book of 3 from The Taylor Made Series.

I know what you’re thinking. It’s unconventional to want a man nine years older than you. It’s inconvenient to crush on your dearest friend’s older brother. It’s silly to pine after a man for six years. It’s cliché to lust after a celebrity. It’s pathetic to fall in love with a man who barely knows you exist.

I know what you’re thinking because I’ve thought it all, too. And yet that hasn’t stopped me from wanting Blake Campbell. Charming, gorgeous, brilliant, kind, selfless – Blake is everything I’ve ever wanted, but he doesn’t see me that way. In fact, he hardly noticed me until one night.

Traumatic events brought us together for the first time, but then he tossed me aside. I know it’s irrational, but I wanted him up until the moment he left me lying there alone.

When his eyes finally open and he finds out I’ve left, will it be too late?

excerpt

They say life is about choices. You spend your life making decisions and dealing with the consequences, whether they are positive or negative. In my tumultuous frame of mind, I make a choice. A very poorly thought out choice, but one that I have to live with, nevertheless.

As soon as Cassidy finishes her encore, I tell the girls that we’re going backstage to meet the singer. They follow behind the private elevator to the lower level of the Chi Center, talking giddily. I push their voices out of my mind, leading them with long, purposeful strides.

There are perks to owning the joint. The security guards clear the way for me, knowing not to bother me when I’m in a foul mood.
With a short knock, I push my way into Cassidy’s crowded backstage room. The moment she lays her fake-eyelash covered gaze on me, she squeals. The sound hurts my ears, but I pretend it doesn’t.

“Blake Campbell, I didn’t know you were coming back here!” She literally launches herself at me, latching her over tanned arms around my neck and thrusting her glitter-speckled tits against my chest.

And then, in plain sight of Stella, I yank the pop star into my arms and thrust my tongue down her throat.

You are a moron.

USA TODAY Bestselling Author Dakota Madison returns with another spicy sports romance. This story set in the world of college basketball.
Neuroscience student SEDONA MILLER is perfectly imperfect. She’s slightly nerdy and slightly eccentric, but completely brilliant.

When an unfortunate accident leaves Sedona with an injured arm and she’s fired from her part-time job shelving books at the university library she has to find a new gig fast.

The only job available mid-semester is working as a tutor for the athletic academic center. And the notorious bad boy of the university’s basketball team, JESSE WALKER, is the one and only guy on the new tutor’s roster

But when SEDONA discovers a secret that could ruin the school’s winning basketball team doing the right thing could mean destroying the only guy she’s ever loved.

excerpt

When I finally hit the last room in a long row of rooms I see a guy sitting there looking bored and staring at two fast food containers in front of him on the table.

He glances up at me when I enter. The first thing I notice is his piercing green eyes. I don’t think I’ve ever seen eyes that green on a human being that weren’t Photoshopped

The second thing I notice is his messy, light brown hair. It doesn’t look like it’s been combed it in a week. It makes me wonder if it’s some new hair trend or if he just doesn’t bother to style it. Not that I have too much room to talk when it comes to hair. My curly red mop has been the bane of my existence since I was a kid. About the only thing I can ever do with it is pull it back into a pony tail.

“Sedona?”

I nod.

“Have a seat.” He points to the chair right next to him.

I remember Lewis’s warning and take a seat across the table instead. I want to be as close to the door as possible. The guy is big and muscular and much more intimidating than I imagined he’d be.

My heart is thumping in my chest because his size and rough demeanor are making me nervous.

When he pushes one of the fast food containers in my direction I cringe. I rarely eat fast food and when I do it’s from Just Veggies, an organic vegetarian place near campus.

He doesn’t hesitate to open his container and take a bite of the messy burger that’s dripping some kind of white sauce all over his pile of fries.

My stomach turns in response.

“I bought you a burger.” He points to the second container he’s pushed in my direction. “Ambrose scheduled our sessions during lunch.”

I make a point of pushing the container back over to him. “No thank you.”

He frowns. “It’s from Frankie’s. Everybody loves Frankie’s burgers.”

“Clearly not everyone.”

His brows knit like he can’t believe I refused the food he bought.

“You don’t want it?” He actually sounds hurt.

“No, I don’t.”

“Why?”

I lift my book bag from the ground and point to one of the many political cause buttons I have covering the knitted tote my mom made for me.

He barely acknowledges it. “What is that supposed to mean?”

Now I’m the one who’s frowning. “Meat is murder. It’s a slogan. It means that I don’t eat animal flesh.”

“You’re one of those vegans?” He doesn’t bother hiding the condescension in his voice.

“Technically I’m a vegetarian. I eat free range, organic dairy products.”

“Fine. I’ll eat the burger.” He glares at me as he opens the second container and takes a huge bite of the burger.

I’m appalled until I notice that he slyly pushes both containers away and doesn’t take another bite of either burger.

“I guess I should have brought an apple for the teacher.”

“Only if it’s organic. And I’m not actually a teacher. I’m a tutor.”

We both stare at each other for a long moment. Awkward does not even begin to describe our pairing. We’re like two people from different planets trying to communicate when we don’t speak each other’s languages.

I remove a slip of paper from my bag. “Mr. Ambrose gave me your schedule of classes for the semester. You’re taking Film Appreciation, The History of Jazz, Advanced Yoga and Stress Management. What’s your major?”

He shrugs. “Undeclared right now. But I’ll probably go with Sports Management.”

“So these are Gen Ed classes?”

He cocks his head and looks confused.

“General Education classes,” I clarify. “Elective classes you need to take to fulfill requirements that aren’t directly related to your major.”

“I guess so.”

I’m a little disturbed by his lackadaisical attitude, but I let it go for the moment. We’re clearly not going to be able to develop much of a rapport so maybe it’s best just to get down to business.

“We’re just handed a class schedule,” he clarifies. “Assigned classes. We don’t pick them ourselves.”

“And they assigned you the History of Jazz? That’s the class that you’re having trouble with?”

“The dude who was supposed to teach the class croaked and they got this new chick who apparently doesn’t like basketball.”

There is so much wrong with his statement I don’t even know where to begin. “Might I suggest that you call your professors either professor or doctor and not chick.”

I bristle at my own use of the derogatory word, but I continue, “And what does her not liking basketball have to do with your performance in the class.”

At this he gives me a sly smile. “Let’s just say she’s not willing to play ball the way the other professors are.”

I’m not sure exactly what he means by that, but there seems to be some kind of sports reference that is lost on me.

“So you’re saying your other classes are going well and you’re just having trouble with the one class, History of Jazz?”

He leans back in his chair and eyes me for a few seconds before he nods. I don’t like when he looks at me like that. It’s like he’s examining some weird, new specimen and trying to make sense of it.

“All of my other teachers are huge basketball fans and they know I’m the in the starting lineup. I’m not sure what the jazz goddess’s problem is.”
I take in a deep breath before I say something that’s sure to get me fired. “Why don’t we start by calling her Dr. Fisher? I think that might help. And why do you think she has a problem?”

“She doesn’t like basketball. That’s not normal. Everybody loves basketball. This entire campus lives and breathes the sport.”

“I don’t love basketball. I don’t even like it. Not even a little bit.”

He actually looks stunned for a moment. Like I slapped him. Then he regains his cocky composure.

“You’re one weird chick,” he mutters almost to himself, but still loud enough that I can hear him.

“Excuse me?” I say even though I heard him. I just didn’t like having an insult hurled at me by someone I don’t even know.

“You.Are.One.Weird.Chick.” His words are slower and louder as if I didn’t hear him the first time.

“I actually heard what you said. I just didn’t like it.”

A smug smirk appears on his face that I would love to slap right off if I could.

I continue. “In case you haven’t noticed I’m not a bird I’m a human being. I’d appreciate it if you didn’t refer to me as a chick.”

He bites his bottom lip as if he’s actually giving it some thought. Then he says, “You’re one weird woman. Is that better?”

“I’m not sure why you have to bring gender into the equation at all. Why not just call me a weird person?”

That makes him laugh. “You don’t care that I think you’re weird. You just don’t want me to call you a chick?”

“I’ve been weird my whole life. I’m used to it.”

“At least you’re willing to own it.”

“So did you bring your textbook with you or are you just going to spend the next ninety minutes taunting me?”

“I kind of like taunting you.”

The U. S. government initiates a secret assassination operation called Phoenix. An elite team of assassins carried out this operation. The mission failed. The team, headed by Captain David Elliott is captured and the horrors and long-term effects of being a P.O.W. are vividly detailed. In the meantime Captain David Elliott’s wife, Sunny is kidnapped by the Argentine Police. She is the love of his life. David and his team go on an international mission to rescue her. This is an action packed book that will have you on the edge of your seat.

excerpt

The Night I Choked My Wife

As she slipped into the room I felt a part of me fuse into her presence. Her beauty immediately arrested me. At first glance she appeared Italian but by the end of the evening our delicate conversation revealed that all of her alluring beauty was from Argentina. Her name was Sonia. We became inseparable from that moment. She became my Sunny, a light to my very dark world.

After all these years of marriage I still don’t see what she saw in me. I was not refined and spiritual. I was not compassionate and flowing with a zeal for social justice. I was Type A, fiercely military bred, dark and quite lethal. Yet her love washed over me and brought security to my existence. She was air to me and I could offer her nothing but a fragmented soul almost destroyed by the horrors inflicted on my life during the Vietnam War.

In battle I was Captain David Eliot and I made a huge mistake in judgment that has forever haunted me. I’ve tried to control the memories. She has come to accept the ramifications of those memories over the years. Those haunting shadows come to me at the least expected times – night sweats, horrible dreams and a consuming darkness in broad daylight that almost makes me implode. Some people call it PTSD – Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I simply call it dreams. For a while they had gone away, now they were back. This time they were worse because I was beginning to lose grip on what was a dream and what was reality. Just like an angel Sunny was there to help me through them – that made me love her more.

I loved her with everything that I had. Every time we made love I wanted her to feel me to the core of her being. I brought her to the end of herself and sent her over the edge of sanity every time. Her response to me was consuming, and the force of her love coming back to me was so overwhelming. How could a man like me be so blessed to have a woman like her. The most precious sounds in my life had always been hearing her fever pitch to the point of no return, but on this particular night there was no soothing sound. There was a frantic gurgling. My arms were not lovingly around her waist drawing her to me. My hands were tightly choking her.

I recoiled in horror as she lay there gasping for air. I scooped her up sobbing. I was shaking uncontrollably. She wrapped her arms around me and softly said, “I love you. Your demons are my demons.” Then she kissed me. “David, will you go and see the priest now?” I made a vow to begin my therapy again.

Interview

Did your book require a lot of research? If so, what kind?

Yes, I had to do quite a lot – Phoenix, the CIA ‘s assassination program in Vietnam that led to Tet 658, The Argentine Secret Service that fought ‘the Dirty War’ and the Falklands War.

This book is very realistic when it comes to war and military actions. It has content for mature audiences because of its gritty nature. Life is that way, its raw, its real and it’s not all rose-colored glasses. Dreamer is an excellent book that shows the struggles that those in the military have to deal with, as well as life with challenges.

What inspired you to write Dreamer?

My belief is that God can and does intervene in our lives. I wanted to write about how he would do that with soldiers.

I wanted to tell a story about how God would offer redemption to warriors. I chose to portray God as a warrior. I know this thought is foreign to most religious readers but shouldn’t be. I took the lead character from the Bible character David, who like the characters in Dreamer was flawed but loved by God.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Dreamer is a book about failed warriors, who lost their way as soldiers and human beings, in the horror that was Vietnam. (That war is so far in people’s rear view mirror, that we have forgotten how really bad it was.) These men made up a SOG (Special Operations Group) team whose mission was to carry out the CIA’s Phoenix Program (the systematic assassination of suspected Viet Cong, (which was so successful it lead to Tet 68). The lead character, David, was the team leader. One of the team members betrayed the team and David is required to execute him, but he is stopped from carrying out the execution by an unseen but powerful force.

His failure to do his duty lead to a horrific chain of events that ends with the team being captured, and tortured. At the moment that death is at hand, the team makes a pact – a covenant with God, that if he saves them they would aid each other no matter what or when for the rest of their lives. Afterwards, each man lives in the “darkness”. Years later God comes to them and give them the chance to redeem themselves and stand in the “light of men” once again. But the path he chooses paralleled with death and destruction. Dreamer is about redemption. God as a warrior gives grace and the chance for redemption to other warriors.
What was the toughest criticism given to you? What was the biggest compliment?

My first reviewer said there was too much sex in the book. She seemed to think I was pre-occupied with the sexual relationships of the characters. I took her comments to heart and toned it down in a rewrite. The biggest compliment was that one reader said he was inspired.

Synopsis

Cara Belasco has been on the run from assassins since childhood. Living in the shadows with her younger brother and one elderly guardian, her luck nearly runs out when the smuggler’s ship carrying them crashes into a soggy jungle planet.

Ben Zashi, the stalwart head of security who rescued her from the wreckage, is very curious about her cover story, and Cara has to fend off his inquires as well as her escalating attraction for him. Will the secrets she’s been hiding come between them, or can Cara allow herself to find passion with the one man who longs to protect her?

excerpt

Cara followed at a jog, or tried to for a few paces until a broad chest appeared in her line of sight, blocking her view of the doorway. Ben Zashi. She’d forgotten about him for a few minutes, which was a first during her time on Gamaliel. He held up both hands and tilted his head, his eyebrow quirked in an inquiring fashion.

“What? Move, I need to go—”

“Actually it would be better if you waited.” He directed her to stand by his door and she did, too shocked by his interference to protest. He walked into their suite of rooms, and she heard his low voice, too indistinct to make out any words. Mat replied a few times and Ben returned, closing the door behind him.

“What are you doing? I need to get in there and—”

“No, you need to get in here unless you want everyone in the building to hear this,” Ben commanded, and a flicker of something close to fear wrapped in a thrill fluttered in her chest.

He jerked his chin at the door behind her, and she turned and entered his rooms. She’d never been inside. The layout seemed to mirror their suite, but she was too unsettled to take notice of more than a piano and a blue sofa. Whirling around as soon as she heard the door close, she found she was face to face with an unsmiling man.

“Give yourself a minute, Cara.”

She shook her head. “No, let me out of here. I need to talk with him.” She’d just found Mat, and this man was going to keep her from him. Unacceptable.

She tried to dodge around him, but he was too quick, flinging out an arm to block one side of the hall, and then the other when she tried it again. Her frustration built up in her chest, and she found it hard to take a deep breath. Ben’s dark eyes never left hers as he talked.

“Listen. You’re upset. He’s upset. Take a breather before you see him. He’s safe in there, and he’s not going anywhere tonight.”

“How do you know that? He just disappeared—”

“No, he went to a new friend’s house and thought he’d have time to get back here before you returned. The school routine is new for him, and he just forgot to check his datpad. Cara, listen, he’s just being a kid, don’t be so hard on him—”

The anger popped in her head in a burst of red light, and all the years of fear, the stress that never let up fueled her rage as she lifted her hands fully intending to shove at Ben’s broad chest with all her might. “You don’t know what you’re talking about. I have to be hard on him or he’ll—we’ll die.”

Her strength failed her as soon as she touched him, and her arms gave out before she could actually push. Ben pulled her in as she fell against him. “Nobody died.”

“But we will,” Cara muttered into his chest as his arms wrapped tightly around her. She wasn’t going to be able to do this on her own. Two men had already died protecting them, and Soren was nearly dead. That left her, a naïve woman with no experience or skills.

“Not on my watch.”

“I can’t do this.” Cara shivered into the comfortable warmth of Ben and tried to talk herself into some courage. She had to do it, there was no one else. But she’d already lost Mat once in the few days she’d been responsible.

Something moving against her hair distracted her. Ben’s grip on her loosened, and with an unexpected ache, she realized he was going to let her go. She didn’t want that, not yet, so she slid her hands around his arms and held on. He said something low she couldn’t make out, and he touched her hair again. The soft and mysterious strokes were mesmerizing. She could hear his heart beating and the steady thump made her feel sleepy, a strange reaction after so much heightened emotion.

Ben moved one of his hands to her cheek and tilted her head to peer at her. She stared into his eyes and wanted to fall into unconsciousness, to just let all of it go for the rest of the day. A respite from her tattered life was all she wanted.

Ben frowned, looked at her mouth, and said, “Blast it.” Then, he kissed her.

I smiled. “Really? Your eyes track her through a room. You find every excuse in the book to be next to her. And when you actually do let yourself accidentally touch her, it’s with so much wonder and awe, it feels … worshipful.”

****

“And in the end, when it was completely out of my hands, I finally surrendered to the reality of what it meant to love you. And it truly was surrender or break into a thousand pieces every day.” He took a deep breath. “Fear paralyzed me, but you, my beautiful woman, are always moving. So I had to break free of the fear to run with you, and since that day, and every day I choose not to fear, I have known more freedom and happiness than I ever imagined was possible.”

***

Archer, Ringo, Charlie, Connor and I became a family on the river Seine. We teased each other, tried to make each other laugh, told stories, and shared secrets. And mostly, we healed.

Love & Devotion

Meet the Author

Jove was born and raised against a backdrop of orchards and potato fields. The youngest of four children, she was raised in a conservative, Christian home and began asking why at a very young age, much to the consternation of her mother and grandmother. At the customary age of eighteen, she fled southern Idaho in pursuit of broader minds and fewer traffic jams involving the local livestock. The road didn’t end in Portland, Oregon, but there were many confusing freeway interchanges that a girl from the sticks was ill-prepared to deal with. As a result, she has lived in the Portland metro area for over fifteen years and still can’t figure out how she manages to spend so much time in traffic when there’s not a stray sheep or cow in sight.

She lives with her partner of seventeen years. Between them they share a collection of six children, one dog, two cats, a mortgage payment, one sedan, and a cushy SUV big enough to hold the Lesbian Brady Bunch on their family outings. One day she hopes to live in a house that doesn’t generate a never ending honey-do list.

Incidentally, she never stopped asking why, but did expand her arsenal of questions to include who, what, when, where and, most important of all, how. In those questions, a story is born.

Her books include The Job (coming October 2014) Uncommon Romance, Love & Devotion, Edge of Darkness, Split the Aces, Chaps, and Indelible. They are available at http://www.boldstrokesbooks.com
