With intertwining memories and world of deceit and betrayal yet to be exposed, Survival, book #1 in the Twisted series, is an intense, compelling page-turner, seen through the eyes of Skye ‘the Skillet’ Jones.

With no friends, no family and a life of loneliness ahead, Skye was looking for a reason to fight. To live. To survive. A once happy family was torn apart, leaving a hazy cloud of confusion, abandonment and fear in its wake. Her twin brother, Oliver, was all she had… until the talons of death and the consequences of his dangerous coping mechanism tore his life from him.

Skye was left alone, mourning the loss of her brother and the life he would never live, when Cut Throat Curtis swooped in and taught her to fight; to control her emotional anguish with physical strength. But he was dangerous, a force to be reckoned with. A man with turmoil and secrets of his own. He soon left as quickly as he’d appeared, becoming a ghost in the life she no longer knew.

She had nothing. She had no one.

When all Skye had was her will to survive, fate gave her Thomas. He fought for her, he fought with her and he loved her like no other.

But fate was waiting, ready to strike with the force of a hurricane when she thought she had everything she’d ever wanted. It was coming, the cruel twist of fate that would bring Skye to her knees and threaten her survival once more…

excerpt

Chapter One

Jay Marshall pressed his lips together as he held the phone. His hands curled into a ball then straightened. He stared out his bay windows overlooking the ocean. Another beautiful day on the beaches of South Florida, not that he cared. Sunshine never filled him with joy. The humidity outside suffocated the spirit, but somehow, with this deal, he’d break free.

“Yes, you’ll see I mean business, Mr. Danvers. My business plans are long term.”

Danvers sucked in his breath, as if he were doubting the sincerity of Jay’s words, then told Jay. “And I’ll meet your girlfriend. It’s always telling with people from Miami. Flashy women and cars do not make good investments on my end.”

Jay gritted his teeth and tugged at his free ear, but kept the phone on the other. Miami advertised plastic women on the highway as a special brand. Flashy came with the area code. Instead he nodded his head and told the potential investor, “I understand. See you next week.”

He hung up the phone and stared out the window. The brightness showed his reflection and his grim frown. Jay needed to win. His eyes squished together. He¹d pay the price for success. He had no other choice.

Jay’s mind raced to his technical girlfriend. Eva was the epitome of flashy, beautiful, and fake. She’d been a friend since high school, and two months ago, they¹d ended up dating. On paper the award winning dramatic actress, his money, and their history should be a match. Yet he couldn’t imagine his entire life videotaped.

If he walked away from her, there would be no regrets. His investors hoped he had a nice, sweet woman on the side. His cousin and her friend, Penelope, flashed in his head before he dropped the thought.
He pushed his hand on the glass window before he stepped back into the shadows of his office.

Darkness didn¹t suit him either. Nothing stirred inside him anymore, though he craved something. Anything other than boredom from the sticky heat of his life.

He shook his head and poked his head out of his office. His secretary sat there typing. “Call Eva. Set up an appointment for us to talk today.”

With the click of the door knob he rolled up his sleeves. He needed the deal to put his goals in line with his investment portfolio.

His eyes narrowed in on the first words, long term growth.

Long term read to his eyes like a rescue rope. He blinked. Life should be lived with long term goals to reach. Freedom meant change.

Today, he’d break up with Eva. In his heart, he’d always hoped for a woman that tugged at his heart strings. But hopes didn’t earn freedom. He’d prove to himself, and the others, John Jay Marshall came out of the game of life on top.

With Chrissy’s return, lines begin to cross from friendship to something more, but will Dex’s secret force them apart forever?

(Can’t Let Go is the fourth novel in the Invisibles Series)

EXCERPT:

Picking it up, still shaking in my hands, a number I don’t recognize crosses the screen. Wavering on whether or not I want to chance this being something at the house, I hit ignore because I don’t want to be bothered with my dad’s so-called business today. Then thoughts of someone raiding or maybe some loser found out where my dad’s operation is. Worse case, someone ratted him out. Figuring someone who I have programmed in my phone would have made the phone call to alert me, I wait to see if they leave a voicemail. Which they do—my phone vibrates a second later.

Clicking speaker, I place the black rectangle on my dresser while I gel my hair. My fingers are manipulating each strand, placing it in the perfect spot when her voice comes across. My hands stop mid-air and I my eyes fixate on the phone. Closing my eyes, that sweet sound that’s only lived in my dreams the past years still unglues me to the core.   “Um … Dex. I’m in town and … um … I was wondering … if maybe we could … um … talk.” Her voice is practically shaking from the awkwardness of the phone call.

“HULK!” Brady screams again. Debating in my head what I should do, I could easily claim ignorance that I never got the call. Say that I was already out of town. Excuses run through my head as to why I would leave her wherever she is. Then the images of her alone, or worse, not. Knowing even with the distance that has formed between us over the years, I could never, would never, not go to her if she needed me.

Walking out my door, I peer over the railing to a sour Brady. “Man, I gotta do something. You guys go without me,” I shout down.

“What is so damn important?” he asks, sensitive to the fact he can tell something’s off with me. Brady is like the father of our friends, protective of us all.

“A friend needs me,” I say, remaining vague. If Brady knew the half of what I did when I leave this house, he’d probably have an anxiety attack.

He stands there staring up at me and wavers at the door. Probably counting in his head how long he has before Sadie, his fiancé, comes in search of him. “What’s up, man?” he asks, stepping up a few stairs.

“I’m not sure yet. I need to make a call.” I’m honest with him because Brady has a sense of comfort about him. Although, I’m fairly certain our secrets are shared with Sadie, he keeps things mostly to himself.

“Do that, and we’ll wait.” He jogs back down the steps, and the front door shuts behind him.

Sitting on my bed, I bite my lip. It’s been so long. Not that she hasn’t crossed my mind; I’m not sure a day goes by that I don’t wonder where she is and what’s she’s doing. I question why she left and never answered my calls. The guilt that I somehow left her behind always resonating inside somewhere within me even when she’s the one who disappeared. The small piece of electronics sits in my hands like a ten-pound weight. There’s no turning back, no erasing from my mind once I press that call icon.

Pushing back my fear, I press the call button, release a deep breath and bring the phone up to my ear. She answers on the first ring, confirming something is seriously wrong. “Dex,” she answers. Another stab of the knife that she still has my number programmed, but I don’t have her obviously changed number.

“Chrissy?” I say her name out loud for the first time in four years. How can her name seem foreign on my tongue?

The line is quiet for a few seconds before she continues. “Hi. I’m in Western … at this place called The Loft. Could you come down here?” she asks.

Synopsis

To rescue her was to rescue his own soul.

On a cold Parisian night, Vicomte Aleksender de Lefèvre forges an everlasting bond with a broken girl during her darkest hour, rescuing her from a life of abuse and misery. Tormented by his own demons, he finds his first bit of solace in sheltering little Sofia Rose.

But when Aleksender is drawn away by the Franco-Prussian war, the seasons pass. And in that long year, Sofia matures into a stunning young woman—a dancer with an understanding of devotion and redemption far surpassing her age.

Alongside his closest friend, Aleksender returns home to find that “home” is gone—replaced by revolution, bloodshed, betrayal—and a love always out of reach. Scarred inside and out, he’s thrust into a world of sensuality and violence—a world in which all his hours have now grown dark, and where only Sofia might bring an end to the winter in his heart.

Inspired by the 1871 Paris Commune, The Frost of Springtime is a poignant tale of revolution, redemption, and the healing power of love.

Rachel L. Demeter lives in the beautiful hills of Anaheim, California with Teddy, her goofy lowland sheepdog, and high school sweetheart of ten years. She enjoys writing dark, edgy romances that challenge the reader’s emotions and examine the redeeming power of love.

Imagining stories and characters has been Rachel’s passion for longer than she can remember. Before learning how to read or write, she would dictate stories while her mom would jot them down for her. She has a special affinity for the tortured hero and unconventional romances. Whether sculpting the protagonist or antagonist, she always ensures that every character is given a soul.

Rachel strives to intricately blend elements of romance, suspense, and horror. Some common themes her stories never stray too far from: forbidden romance, soul mates, the power of love to redeem, mend all wounds, and triumph over darkness. Her dream is to move readers and leave an emotional impact through her words.

excerpt

The heat of their bodies mingled as one. With each breath, Aleksender drank in the sweet essence of his beloved ward. His mind swam with unorthodox visions and desires. He inclined his head, lost to the power of her nearness, entranced by everything that was Sofia Rose.

“Alek, my Alek …”

Each word infused Aleksender with a delicious and undeniable warmth. Intoxicated by roses and wintertime, he found it difficult to speak, difficult to think. Breathless, he swallowed and met the haunting depths of her eyes.

“Please,” she dreamily murmured, “I want you to kiss me again…”

Synopsis

I’m sick and tired of my boss, DeVon Ricci, screwing with me. He signed the guy I was seeing just so I couldn’t date him, and now he fired an employee who’d insulted me.
If he wasn’t expecting me to flirt with every top Hollywood executive to help him close deals, I might have thought he felt something for me.

The problem is, as angry as he makes me, I can’t stop thinking about him. There is only one way I know to get him out of my mind. I have to f**k him.

The CEO of Mirage Talent, DeVon Ricci needs to be in control, but ever since Krissy Jensen walked into his company, he’s found his control slipping. He knows what he needs to do to get it back again, but the more time he spends with her, the less he’s sure he’ll be able to follow through.

When two passionate, headstrong people finally crash together, they can’t help but ignite. The question is, will either of them be able to walk away unburned?

review

I am absolutely loving this series and holy crap this instalment did not disappoint!! The attraction between DeVon and Krissy is unreliable but they both need a freaking slap and locking in a room together until that can sort their crap out!!  The tension is amazing, sexually and otherwise!

I really love the way that we get to know how affected DeVon appears to be by his new employee yet he appears powerless to know how to deal with this crap he is feeling.   I also love that Krissy is a force to be reckoned with too and presses the right buttons!  The two of them together are explosive.

I need part III like now because the ending just leaves you hanging and in big style too! Krissy and DeVon are seriously one of the hottest but most frustrating couples I’ve had the pleasure of reading about in a long while and just hope we get all we anticipate in part three and the threads of answered questions become clear!

Five hot stars!

Cover Reveal

P&P Final Cover

Book Title: Prim & Proper
Author: Barbara Cutrera
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: September 16, 2014
Hosted by: Book Enthusiast Promotions

Synopsis

Sean Proper, the youngest principal ever to head the renowned Kensington Academy, knows he’s smart and driven to succeed, but he has no idea he’s also living proof that miracles do happen. Unaware of the truth, he can’t foresee how radically his life will be altered by his introduction to Prim Aurora, a businesswoman whose past is shrouded in mystery. Each having extremely different and unusual upbringings, neither Sean nor Prim ever intend to become seriously involved in any romantic relationship. Prim’s inexplicable fears, Sean’s need to be in control, and the appearance of a dead body in the Aurora family home will test the passion and love between them. As their relationship is jeopardized by past events and a killer still on the loose, their determination and commitment to their dream of a life spent together is threatened. Only elusive revelations regarding the secrets in Prim’s past and the circumstances relating to the miracle surrounding Sean’s birth can provide Prim and Proper with the promise of a happy future.

excerpt

They had barely made it inside and closed and locked the door behind them when Sean took Prim’s face in his hands and kissed her. She rested her palms on his chest then slid her hands down and undid his pants. He was quickly naked in the center of the room, although she remained fully clothed.

“Wait,” she declared. “Don’t go anywhere.”

Sean chuckled and asked her where she thought he was going to go. He watched her walk back towards the master bedroom, listened as she moved around in the room, and savored the sight of her walking back to him. He noted she wasn’t wearing her shoes anymore and deduced that she was probably not wearing anything else except the gown.

As she slipped her arms around his neck, Prim urged him to make love to her. When he pointed out it would ruin her dress, she pointed out that her dress could be cleaned. When he asked her what would happen if they tore it, she answered that it could be stitched.

“What if I tear it off you and it can’t be repaired?”

She kissed him and murmured, “I love this dress, and I’m glad you love it, too. But it’s a dress. If it gets destroyed because of what we do while I’m wearing it, then I won’t regret it.”

LAST Empathy DividerSynopsis
Blake:

I am a brother
I am a police detective
I am a contract killer
I don’t want to love
I don’t want to feel
I don’t want … EMPATHY.

They say some people are born with decreased activity in the front central lobe causing them a deficiency in empathy. Maybe that’s true about me but whether I was born this way or created in a moment of evil, empathy was something I didn’t possess until her green eyes met mine in the mirror and I couldn’t take her life.
I didn’t want to feel, didn’t want this woman in my life complicating how I lived but she was there at every turn. Sent to haunt me for my sins. Her light so bright she provoked a shadow from everyone she touched. When a job turns bad quickly altering my life forever I’m forced to feel. When nothing is making sense I’m forced to face truths I never would recover from. When life drowns you in its cruelty you don’t know which way the current will drag you or who you’ll become once you re-surface.

Melody:

I was a daughter
I was a student
I was a victim
Did I have his love?
Did I make him feel?
Did I have his empathy?
When the actions of a soulless killer forces sorrow into my veins I never dreamed the man healing my wounds would be the one to leave the worst scar. His love would scar my soul. Scars are permanent; I will never feel the relief from them. Will I learn to live with them, remember why I have them and learn never to let him close enough to inflict more? Will I eventually cover them… like tattoos coating them with new memories, new love and new starts? I didn’t know these answers because the pain was too suffocating, the only thing I knew was they will always be under the surface lingering. He had scars too, from his sins. There is nothing that can cover them, they were too deep, too ugly, too dark and they marked us both forever.

review

Ker has blown me away with this book and I’m still reeling at the ending even though it is a few days since I finished it!

This book had me at the blurb and holy crap it didn’t disappoint! The twists and turns in this story had me captivated from the start and had my attention right until even the last flaming sentence! Ker what are you doing to me?!?! Seriously!

If you are a fan of sweet angsty romances then this isn’t the book for you!!! It is a dark read but in a really messed up sense and just when you *think* you know what is happening BAM you are hit with yet another mind messing twist!

This has to be a must read for 2014 and is likely to be one of those “Marmite” reads (you’ll either love it or hate it) but you definitely have to give it a go.

Melody’s sadness was deep and you really feel for her, especially as you have a first hand experience of how her life crumbled. Blake is a complex character and he caused me the most issues for the best part of the book. You don’t want to like him but …..! The sexual chemistry between these two is immense and from the get go you know that they ought to be destined for great things together but then there is a bigger part of you that knows they shouldn’t be and this really messed with me!

Then there is Ryan. He is just … well there really are no words! He is the focus of Blake, the overprotective big brother who does what he can to keep him safe and on the straight and narrow. Even though Blake’s life is messed up and he has seen and experienced things leaving him broken, he still goes the extra mile to make sure Ryan is cared for. Ryan is a friend to Melody when she really needs one too. But then everything just goes to shit and I still can’t get my head around how things actually turned out. Aarrgh!

The ending will get you! It really will and when I say that I mean right up until THE LAST CHUFFING page too! I’m in bits, and feel like I have been well and truly bitten, chewed up and spat right back out. I can’t rave more about giving this a go and it has to be up there as one of those MUST reads!

Five “I still can’t chuffing believe” it stars!

LAST Empathy DividerMeet Ker DukeyKer Dukey

I have always had a passion for storytelling, whether it be through lyrics or bed time stories with my sisters. I wanted to be an actress growing up so I could live many roles but I learned early on that my mind was too active… I would want to change the script.I would watch films and think of ways they could of improved the story if they took another direction so i thought it best that i tell my own.

My mum would always have a book in her hand when I was young and passed on her love for reading, inspiring me to venture into writing my own. I tend to have a darker edge to my writing. Not all love stories are made from light, some are created in darkness but are just as powerful and worth telling.

When I’m not lost in the world of characters I love spending time with my family. I’m a mum and that comes first in my life but when I do get down time I love attending music concerts or reading events with my younger sister.

You can find me on facebook where i love interacting with my readers.

Without You is book one in the Love Wanted in Texas series.

GOOD READS link for Without You

  tEASER 2

review

Kelly has done it again!! I will admit to being a tad dubious about reading the spin off from the Wanted series (This has been one of my favourite series ever!) because seriously how can you improve on that!

However Kelly blew me away with Without You and being able to see the guys as grownups and dealing with the same stuff that their parents went through with them has made me laugh, cry and melt my heart too!

The new bunch of kids on the block are fantastic and as expected they are a tight bunch and look out for each other. They have charmed me and I have loved hearing the story of Alex and Will too.

Young and in love but with expectations from their parents (Gunner especially – what is he thinking and does he not remember falling in love too?!) they are thrown apart and are forced to live away from each other.  Will they be able to stay true to their love?

I want to rave and rave about this book but will end up lacing this review with spoilers so I will just say if you are fan of the WANTED series you HAVE to read this story and as per usual your heart will break and there are a few OMG moments in there too but true to Kelly it is a fantastic heartwarming tale and a fantastic start to the new series!

It deserves waaaaay more but I’m giving this a full five fab stars from me!

Picnic table in shade of triple tree at the beach of Bunzen Lake

Excerpt:

I heard a knock on my bedroom door, and I flew up out of bed. I threw open the door, hoping to see Will.

“Libby…” I walked back to my bed and sat down. The tears began falling again. “Please tell me where he is.”

Will hadn’t come home for Thanksgiving break, and no one knew where he was, not even Luke.

She walked up to me and dropped to sit on the floor. “I swear to you, Alex, I don’t know. We’ve all been trying to call him. My parents are so worried about him.”

“He wouldn’t let me explain.” I cried harder as I put my hands up to my face.

“Alex, I have to ask you something, and you have to be honest with me. I talked to Grace.”

I dropped my hands and looked her in the face. “What did Grace tell you?”

“The truth—that you’ve been spending a lot of time with this Blake guy. Do you have feelings for him, Alex?”

“No! Well, yes…I mean, no. Damn it!” I shouted as I stood up.

Spinning around, I looked at Libby. “I don’t know. I don’t have feelings for him like I have for Will, but something is there. I just keep hearing these voices in my head. I don’t know what to do, Libby. I love Will. I want Will, but when I’m around Blake, I…I want…”

 “Him?”

The tears were pouring down my face. “I don’t think so. Sometimes, Will sends me these text messages. They drive me insane with lust, and then I’ll see Blake, and I get these weird feelings. I’m not sure if I’m just missing Will, or if I…if I…”

“If you have feelings for Blake.”

 “Alex?”

I looked up and saw my father standing there. This was his fault. It was his damn voice in my head that I’d kept listening to.

“This is your fault,” I said.

My father looked shocked. “Excuse me?”

“You made me go to UT when you knew I wanted to go to A&M. I hate UT! I hate it! If I had been with Will at A&M, none of this would have happened. I hate you!” I pushed past my father and ran down the stairs.

“Alexandra Eryn! You stop right now!” my mother called out.

I ran past Colt and out the back door. I needed to find Will. I needed to get fresh air.

I ran into the barn, and Banjo poked his head out of his stall. I grabbed a lead rope, and then I walked into his stall, clipped it on, and led him out. I jumped up on him and began riding him bareback. I let Banjo lead the way as I sobbed and fought to catch my breath.

I wasn’t sure how long I had been out riding Banjo. I just sat on him, feeling numb. When he made his way to the river, I jumped off and stood there. I watched him graze on the grass. I dropped his lead, and I walked over to a tree. I slowly slid down it and stared out at the river. I had no tears left.

I leaned my head back and replayed the whole thing over again in my head. I thought of every single thing Will had heard and how it must have sounded to him.

I closed my eyes and whispered, “Will, please come back to me. Please.”

I felt something hitting my boot, and I opened my eyes to see Banjo. I smiled and looked up at my giant beauty. “I can always count on you, boy. Isn’t that right?”

He began bobbing his head up and down, and I let out a giggle.

I stood up and began running my hands along his side and back. “Oh, Banjo, I really messed things up.” I buried my face into my horse and softly cried.

“Alex? You feel like company?”

I looked up and saw my father. I walked over to him, and he pulled me into his arms. I completely fell apart. My legs gave out on me, and we both slowly hit the ground. He pulled me onto his lap and held me while I cried.

“Alex, please don’t cry, baby.”

“Daddy, he’s gone. He left me.”

He began rocking me while I attempted to settle down.

“Shh…baby girl. Please, please don’t be upset.”

I pulled back and looked into my father’s eyes. “I didn’t…I didn’t mean it when I said…when I said I hated you. Daddy, I didn’t mean it.”

He pulled me back into him. “I know, Alex. I know.”

“I love him, Daddy. I love him so much, and I hurt him so bad.”

He pulled back and placed his finger under my chin. “Alex, from what I understand, Will didn’t give you a chance to explain. Just give him time to cool down, sweetheart.”

I tried to smile. “Daddy, I kept hearing your voice over and over in my head. I tried liking UT, Daddy.

***EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW***

Josh and Heather!

We here at the blog are so honoured and happy to have had the chance to chat to Josh and Heather from the amazing Wanted series by Kell Elliott and now also the side stars of the new Love Wanted in Texas Series!!!!

I love you guys and have to say that you are my favorite couple by far (just don’t tell the others I have said that!).

So, how is life for you guys now?

Heather: Very well. Both of our kids are off to college so it’s a bit quiet in the house.

I know in the past you have both had to deal with some heartbreaking issues.  Josh, your accident and Heather the sad passing of your parents.  How do you think that has shaped your relationship?  Do you think that these issues have make you both more protective as parents too?

Heather: I think if anything it just makes you appreciate life more. I don’t think it has made more protective. Life is going to happen, that’s the way we learn things.

Josh: I agree with Heather. What we went through made us strong for sure though.

Sorry to bring this up Josh but your past has been decidedly  “colorful” – do you think that this has had an effect on how you have brought up the twins?  Especially Will?

Josh: I’m sure. We raised Will to respect women. They are to be treasured. I think we succeeded.
I never believed in love at first sight until I heard your story!  What was it that made you both know in that moment that you have found your soul mate?  Do you hope that Will and Libby will experience love like you have?

Heather: I just knew the moment I saw him and my world became alive again.

Josh: *Smiling* Something about Heather’s smile just healed my heart. I can’t even explain it.

Heather: I think we both want Will and Libby to experience the love we have experienced.

I must admit Josh, you are a closet romantic and have made me swoon on many an occasion! You are such a lucky lady Heather and I’m insanely jealous (but happily married myself so please don’t worry..!) Did you learn everything you know about romancing from your friends Gunner, Jeff and Brad or is this stuff you come up with on your own? And what advice will you pass on to Will and Libby?

Josh: *Laughing* I’m sure I picked up one or two things from the guys, but really it comes down to loving and taking care of what is yours. We have always told Will and Libby to respect other people. Treat them the way you would want to be treated.

How do you both feel about Will dating Alex?  And what did you feel when you discovered they were serious about each other?

Heather: We love Alex like she is our own daughter so we are happy for both of them.

Josh: I think the two of them are very much in love. I’m proud of Will for the way he shows Alex how much he loves and cares about her.

As parents of both a guy and a girl, is it difficult to treat each of them the same (especially when it comes to the other sex!)?

Heather: No, you just deal with different…issues.

Josh: *Laughs* Girls are for sure harder, I’m not going to lie.

It is amazing to now be seeing your kids growing up together like you did with your gang of amazing (and insanely good looking) friends.  If you look at your friends as parents for a moment can you sum each of them up in one word

Jeff – Josh: Funny

Ellie – Heather: Loving

Gunner – Josh: passionate

Ari – Heather: fiesty

Amanda – Heather: Happy

Brad – Josh: protective

Quick fire questions:
Lace or satin? Satin

Boxers of briefs? Boxers

Chocolate or flowers? Flowers

Night in or night out? In

Ford or Dodge? (sorry I couldn’t resist?!) Both

Thank you so much for taking the time to chat!

Meet the Author

Ann’s been married to the same man since dirt. She loves shopping at GoodWill. Hates talking on the telephone and a really sharp pencil makes her happy.

She lives in Texas where she drinks too many Diet Dr. Peppers and bakes way too many sweet thangs!

excerpt

The cadence of his breathing filled the room and Maggie decided she was glad he was there.

“Jace?”

“What?”

“Why do you do it?”

“Do what?”

“Go from girl to girl. My mother was promiscuous because she tried to make up for everything wrong in her life—no relationship with her family, a kid she didn’t want. But you have the most wonderful family in the world. And you have friends—and talent. I don’t understand what you’re trying to compensate for.”

He didn’t say anything, so she said, “You don’t have to answer. I shouldn’t have asked. I just finished telling you to stay out of my business and now I’m butting into yours.”

“It isn’t that I don’t want to answer. It’s—I don’t know the answer. Maybe it’s evolutionary psychology. You know, spill your seeds and all that crap.”

“You’re kidding, right? That theory has to do with finding the best candidate for breeding to produce the best offspring. It isn’t an excuse to screw every female in Texas. Unless you’re saying you want to impregnate women to create a bunch of little football All-American’s?”

“Hell, no. My policy is no glove, no love. I’m saying, could be, men aren’t supposed to be monogamous.”

“You’re speaking for your entire gender?”

“Yeah.”

“So—your dad could have women on the side and that would be okay.”

“No! All right, you’ve made your point. Some men can be happy with one woman.”

“But not you.”

He rolled up on his elbow and rested his face in his hand. “I don’t know how to say this without sounding like a complete jerk. I guess I do it because I can. From the time I was in junior high, girls have thrown themselves at me and all I’ve done is take advantage of it. I’ve never lied to get a girl to sleep with me. I’ve never told one I loved her or promised forever. I don’t even spend the night. They know what to expect from me.” He flopped back down. “Maybe I’ve slept with more than my share, but I don’t consider myself a bad guy. Do you?”

“Does it matter what I think?”

“Yeah.”

“Well then, I think you’re just as emotionally unavailable as I am. I avoid men because I’m afraid I’ll losemy heart, and you go from girl to girl to keep from giving yours away.”
