5* REVIEW from Emthebookbabe:
This is a brilliant end to a brilliant series! I cannot say how much I have not only enjoyed this instalment but also the entire series.  I love a good romance and the BDSM element has added to this journey but also I have absolutely LOVED the murder/thriller thread in this too.
And before I go on can I just say that I DID guess who had done it and was utterly surprised a the end of the last book with the way it had ended but I was slightly disappointed that I hadn’t guessed the culprit! And I wasn’t sure at all how this last part of the series was going to go.  But I wasn’t disappointed. It is a great tie up of all of the loose ends of the series and finally we get to see the actual relevance of the elections too!  What a fantastic small twist in the tale at the end this brought!
What more can I say – I have been left utterly satisfied with how this series has turned out and the ending is perfect!  There are a lot of revelations and Kate really comes in to her own by the end.  And any doubts I have had about Jaxon have also been totally wiped out too!
Well done Shelly, and i look forward to reading more for you very soon!
Five amazing stars!

TEN MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT BDSM
  1. It’s all about sex.
TRUTH: BDSM is about many things and sex is only a part. It’s a consensual exchange of power.

  1. It’s all about pain.
TRUTH: BDSM stands for bondage, discipline, dominance, submission, sadism, masochism. In other words, there are
a variety of ways people practice BDSM. Just because you’re a submissive doesn’t mean you’re a masochist and not all Dominants enjoy inflicting pain. Whips and chains are not required.
  1. Sadists are killers.
TRUTH: Are some killers sadists? Yes. Are some sadists killers? Yes. But sadism in itself does not mean you’re prone toward violence. To qualify as BDSM, it must be consensual.
  1. Dominants are mostly men.
TRUTH: While most erotic romances about BDSM showcase male Dominants, female Dominants or Dommes are common.
  1. There’s only one way to practice it.
TRUTH: Every healthy relationship includes responsibilities, expectations, and boundaries. But what works in one relationship may not work for another. It’s the same in BDSM, only the responsibilities, expectations, and boundaries are explicitly negotiated.
  1. People who engage in the lifestyle are abusers or suffer from abuse.
TRUTH: BDSM is not abuse. First, it is consensual. Second, the masochist/submissive/bottom can use his/her safe word to stop it. Third, there is no research to suggest a higher incidence of previous abuse for those in the BDSM lifestyle than the general population.
7. People who engage in the lifestyle have a psychological condition.
TRUTH: The American Psychiatric Society no longer classifies participation in BDSM as a mental disorder.
8. People in the lifestyle are promiscuous.
TRUTH: There is no evidence to support that those who engage in BDSM are any more promiscuous than the general population.
9. No one you know practices it.
TRUTH: Want to bet? An estimated five to ten percent of people practice S&M, but plenty more tie up their lover in the bedroom (thirty percent). Ever allow a lover to blindfold you? In doing so, you’re consensually handing over power to him/her and trusting him/her to honor your boundaries. This is part of BDSM. Based on that definition, twenty percent of the population engages in the practice.
10. It is your business to know what happens behind closed doors.
TRUTH: Even if your neighbours are part of the lifestyle, it is none of your business. They have the same right to privacy as you, so unless they choose to divulge their sexual activities, don’t worry about it. They won’t bite you without your consent. J

SYNOPSIS:

Madison Miller is broken. Everyone she’s loved throughout her life has left her in one way or another. Her father died when she was ten years old. Her mother left to return to Spain. Now she’s watching her only brother’s casket descend into the ground after a fatal accident. Plus her boyfriend since the sixth grade is dumping her for “not being enough”.
Madison escapes from the funeral, heading to a hotel bar to drown her sorrows. There she meets a stranger who awakens something inside of her. He helps her forget that life is a series of losses. For one night she gains someone to care for her. In those stolen moments, nothing else matters. The next morning, though, all she can feel is guilt, so she slips away without saying goodbye.
Madison is devoted to those she loves and would do anything for her family. She finds herself moving back home when her brother’s widow needs help caring for their seven-year-old daughter. Little does she know, she will soon face the biggest challenge of her life.
In the near future, fate will have their paths cross again, and the question will be whether this complicated but caring woman can convince this distrustful and disillusioned man to believe in falling in love for the first time in his life. Will passion and desire be enough to surmount all of life’s obstacles, or will the threat of heartache and overwhelming responsibility keep these two lovers apart forever?

EXCERPT:

I pulled the chair out of the way and braced my hands on the smooth laminate surface of the desk. I offered him my back, unsure if I could go through with it if I had to look at him. He was insanely hot, but he was also a complete stranger. His hands ran over my body, not staying in the same place longer than a beat. He tugged at the twist in my hair until the loose locks fell around my shoulders.

I closed my eyes and adjusted my stance until our bodies were properly aligned. “Now,” I commanded and thrust my hips back into his.

“Do you have a condom?” he asked.

“No.”

“Hold on a minute.” He found his boxers and tugged them on.

“You’d better fucking hurry,” I growled. He opened his part of the door that connected to the adjoining room and pounded his fist on the door that opened to the other room. I jumped into the bed and pulled the golden pinstriped blanket over my naked body.

I couldn’t see who opened the other door, but I could hear the two men talking.

“Bro, I need a condom,” my stranger said.

“Tough luck, I only have five left, and I need them all,” the other voice responded.

They argued in hushed tones for a few moments before both doors slammed shut.

“I don’t have a condom, but I swear I’m clean,” he said as he walked toward me with hopeful eyes. I could tell he was being truthful. Something about him told me this wasn’t his average Saturday night.

“So am I.” Even though Ethan and I never used condoms, neither of us had ever been with anyone else. That was about to change…or maybe it already had. For all I knew, Ethan might have jumped into someone else’s bed after he drove away from me.

I climbed out of bed and got back into position at the desk as he kicked off his boxers. I forced myself to stay in the moment. I may end up regretting this, but I had to go through with it. I had to find a way to forget about everything that had happened.

My stranger came up behind me and pressed his impressive length against my ass. “Put it in,” he growled softly in my ear. I reached down with one hand, moved my legs a little further apart, and guided his massive cock until the tip of him rested at my entrance.

He pushed about four glorious inches inside me and then paused. I looked down to where our bodies connected and realised he still had a long way to go. I was already stretched further than I ever had been before and was unsure of how much more I could take.

“Oh, fuck. I’ve never felt anything so amazing in my life,” he said between heavy breaths. “You’re so hot and tight around my cock.”

“Shh. Less talking, more fucking.” Of course I picked a talker. Any other day, I might have appreciated his commentary, but in that moment I needed to feel his hunger, experience his desire for me. He was right, though: I did fit his impressive cock tighter than a glove. I’d imagine he’d be a snug fit for any woman.

I thrust my ass backward in protest of the delay. I needed to be filled, consumed. I needed to be completely taken by a man who couldn’t control his need for me.

A primal sound vibrated in his throat as he slowly buried himself to the hilt before stilling once more.

I looked up into the oval mirror that hung on the wall over the desk. The way his face scrunched as he fought to maintain control was the hottest thing I’d ever seen. A man who likely spent countless hours perfecting techniques to bring a woman to the heights of ecstasy was losing his composure because of me.

“Fuck me, please,” I begged. “I need you to come so hard you feel it in your teeth.” I need to know I’m enough for you.

He took a few tentative strokes in and out of my depths. His strong hands slid around my waist and up my ribs to cup my aching breasts. He picked up the pace as his fingers teased the sensitive peaks. His palms absorbed the bounce caused by the impact of his hips colliding with mine. A new wave of heat settled in my lower belly, which was promptly followed by guilt.

I was so confused. Ethan didn’t want me anymore—I wasn’t enough for him. So, why was I thinking about him when I had another man’s cock inside of me?

Because Ethan is the love of your life, dumbass. The taunting voice in my head was right. I should have been fighting for Ethan instead of fucking someone who could be a serial killer for all I knew.

Ethan doesn’t want you. This guy does. I wished the bitch in my head would make up her damn mind.

A drop of sweat fell onto my back as my stranger pulled out abruptly. “Turn around,” he demanded as he spun me to face him. “Something wrong? You checked out on me.” I couldn’t look him in the eyes; I was afraid he would see the cyclone of guilt and despair that wreaked havoc in my soul. He cupped my cheeks in his large hands and tilted my head up, so I had no choice but to meet his gaze. The vulnerability in his beautiful blue eyes shocked me.

“Sorry, I’m okay.” I put on my best smile, which seemed to placate him. The dazzling grin he gave me in return fanned the flame between my legs. All thoughts of Ethan disappeared, and I was desperate to get my stranger back inside me.

I tried to return to my original position facing the desk, but he stopped me with a firm grip on my hips. “Don’t turn away from me. I want to watch your gorgeous breasts bounce every time I slam into your tight body.” He lifted me by my waist and sat me on the edge of the desk. “I want you to look at me, so you know who’s inside you when you come.” He stepped between my spread legs. “This is going to be hard and fast to take the edge off. I’ll go slower next time.”

Strong hands slid down my body and hooked behind my knees. He lifted my legs to tilt me back until I had to support myself on my forearms. Without warning, he thrust into me. I hooked my ankles together behind his back so I wouldn’t shift as his hands moved to my hips. His savage grip would leave marks for several days—and that thought just made me hotter.

He adjusted his angle of penetration several times. I couldn’t stop the animalistic noise that originated deep in my chest as he hit my sweet spot. His hard flesh created delicious friction inside me, and his pelvis rubbed against my clit with every stroke. The sound of his hips slapping against my ass combined with the smell of our coupling nearly sent me
into sensory overload.

“I’m not going to last much longer. Are you on the pill?”

“Yes.”

“Thank God. You need to come. Now,” he commanded.

“No… Feels too good… Need more…”

My pleas turned out to be an exercise in futility when he reached between our glistening bodies to stroke my clit.

“Oh, fuck!” I screamed as I convulsed around him. My body and mind shattered simultaneously. All at once the tension, sorrow, and anger that had built up over the past few days was expelled from my body. He echoed my curse and followed me over the edge.

Mia Phoenix is an overly responsible nineteen-year-old striving for stardom since losing her parents in a house fire.

When Mia ends up on Kolton’s team for the debut of the new nationwide singing competition, The Stage, she’s not sure if it’s her or her voice that he’s hellbent to control.

After he takes special interest in her welfare, they’ve been warned, any contact between them outside of filming is strictly forbidden.

He has other ideas.

She’s a phoenix rising from the ashes, the only one who understands the pain that lies beneath the persona. Though he’s not sure if he’s too bad for her, he can’t stay away.

All sinners have a past. All saints have a future. But, does being born in fire make the fissures weak in all the wrong places, or stronger than they’ve ever known?

excerpt

The Stage is written for an adult audience 18+. This excerpt contains adult language. Copyright, Shelby Rebecca, 2014. All rights reserved.

In this excerpt of THE STAGE, Kolton Royce has made his team on the nationwide singing competition, The Stage, wait all day and into the evening to film a group scene together. Mia Phoenix has just found out that Kolton has hired a nanny to take care of her little nine-year-old sister, Riley (who she’s raising alone after the house fire that took the lives of both parents) so she can still compete on the show. After filming the scene, he offers to take her to the hotel where she’s been staying while they’ve been filming. He picks up her sleeping sister and gets in the back of his car. This is what happens next.

Chapter Four

Call me Kole

“Something funny, Mia?” he asks, his face half shadowed as the car begins to move us forward.

“Riley hates boys,” I say. “She’d be so pissed if she knew she was all nestled up to you like that.”

“Well, it can be our secret,” he says, and a chill runs up my spine. I want out of this car, now.

“Are we going to the hotel?” I ask to appease the odd feeling in the pit of my stomach.

“We need to talk about that,” he says. His chin sticks out and he rubs the stubble on his cheek.

“What are you doing?” I feel brave all of the sudden, but my voice gives away how aware I am of my own lack of control over this situation.

“I want you to call me Kole.” His voice is deep. He sounds troubled. Nothing like the entertainer I’m used to watching on TV.

“Why do you want me to call you Kole?” Adrenaline. Heart pounding. Take a breath.

“Say it again,” he says, shutting his eyes. His voice sounds carnal and filled with need. It scares me.

“I’m not going to call you that. I just need you to take us to our hotel?” I need his help, but I can tell he’s not being honest with me.

“Mia,” he says. And oh, the way my name comes out of his mouth. “I saw you the other day outside the studio, then your voice up there. You’ve really stood out to me, overall. I want to, no—I need to help you.”

“Kolton, I—”

“I’ve read your file,” he says, interrupting me. “I’ve watched the media footage about your parents and the fire,” I have to cover my mouth with my hand.

“I don’t—”

“We have a lot in common.” His voice sounds like tears when they’re stuck in the throat. “I feel very protective of you,” he admits, and clears his throat.

My hands are shaking. Is he crazy or something? Like one of those celebrities who owns a puma and wants only red M&Ms in his dressing room? Plus, we’ve been driving for too long. Where is he taking us?

“Are we on the freeway?” I ask. It’s hard to see out of these black windows. They’re eerily dark like shadows and secrets. I feel agitated—my eyes too wide to blink.

“Yes,” he says, his eyebrows furrowed.

“Why?” I ask, noting the slight tremors of my hands.

“I’d rather just show you.”

“Listen, just because I’m on your team doesn’t mean—,” I start.

“It’s all or nothing for me,” he interrupts. He’s rubbing his thumb into the palm of his hand and talking to the shadow window.

“You’re really controlling.”

“Don’t say that,” he scolds, as his jaw tenses up.

“Like that’s going to help,” I say.

“What?”

“Snapping at me.” I fold my arms and lean back into the seat.

“I don’t want you to be afraid of me. When I want something, I get it. Does that make sense?”

“And what you want is?”

“Hmm,” he says, contemplating. “To help you, to help take care of your sister so you have limited distractions, and you can go all the way to the finals. For now, that’s what I want.”

“I’m not a groupie who’s willing to be abducted and taken wherever you want me to go.” But then again, I guess he did exactly that. Anger boils up in me like boiling water.

He ignores me. We stare at opposing black windows, sitting in silence. Only the hum of the tires on asphalt and the in and out of Riley’s slumber-breaths between us.

I’m too agitated to ask him where we’re going. If he refused to tell me again, I’m going to go off. We take a slight right, getting off the freeway and head down a road lined with high-rise buildings. The car stops and I can’t control the tremors in my hands as I wait for him to say something. Explain himself.

“Kolton? Where are we?” I ask, my voice higher than I’d meant it to be. We’re parked in front of a brick high-rise with two huge ferns outside the front entrance.

“The Wilshire Thayer,” he says. “I didn’t have a chance to talk to you. It was a split-second decision.” He pinches between his eyes with his thumb and forefinger. “I’ve moved you to the penthouse here. It’s an exclusive building. The security is tighter than the hotel. I feel better about you staying here while I’m gone.”

“What? I—you—I’m? You moved our stuff out of the hotel?”

“Not personally, no.”

“Is this something you’ve done for your whole team? Like, we’re all staying here?”

“No, Mia, they’re not,” he says, as he leans slightly forward, his green eyes are being highlighted by the street light. They look predatory and possessive. “I only want what’s best for you.” I’m shaking my head no. I put my hand out to ward off any more talking from him. This is not fucking okay.

“Just take us back to the hotel,” I demand.

“No. That’s not going to be possible.” He leans back into the partial shadows.

“This is why you were late today?” I ask, feeling honored, but smothered all in the same moment.

“Partly, yes,” he admits, looking straight through me again. My whole body shudders. I do not want to be under anyone’s control. “Let’s get her inside,” he says, as he taps the window. The door is opened from the outside, and he motions for me to get out first.

“We need to talk about this!”

“Not now, Mia,” he admonishes me like a child. “I’ve had a very long day—and nothing you say is going to change anything at this point. Let’s go inside and discuss it.”

I stomp out of the car and then he comes out, holding Riley, and walks past the front desk. The doorman nods to him, and we are ushered into one of the elevators. His driver is with us, and I notice a gun strapped under his arm. He must also be his bodyguard. I feel dizzy, nauseated. I put my hand over my stomach to ease the rumbling, boiling rage.

The older man has inserted a key into the elevator control. I’m assuming it’s because he’s taking us to a floor that’s off limits to the rest of the building.

There’s twelve floors and then a “P”. Penthouse, I guess. What! There’s thirteen floors? What’s up with me and the number thirteen these days?

I look at Riley. She’s so tired. She’s not moved a muscle. She’s even snoring a little.

“You don’t live here, do you?” I ask, hearing the shaking in my own voice.

“Some of the time, yes.” I’m pursing my lips together and biting the inside of the bottom one. “I also have a house in the hills.” My fingers have unknowingly chipped off almost all of my dark nail polish.

“Does it have a fire escape?” I ask. If we’re going to the top floor, that really worries me.

“It has the best built-in alarm, and that includes fire. It’s completely up to code. I had the sprinklers installed myself before I moved in. And yes, there’s a fire escape—just installed,” he says. “It reaches down to the floor below you.” He looks like he’s in pain as he says it, like it makes him sad that I asked.

“Since I have no way to leave tonight, we’ll stay the night. But we’re going back to the hotel tomorrow.” I’m mad at him. Furious. Someone had to go through our belongings to pack them up. And shouldn’t he have asked me first?

He doesn’t answer me. “I’m not some slutty girl who sleeps her way up the ladder,” I say, defensively. To that, he laughs a little.

“No, I didn’t think you did.”

BLOG STOP Love, Honor & Hope Anthology

LHH_blitz_banner

Love, Honor, & Hope – A Benefit for the United States War Veteran’s PTSD Foundation

Eight authors are joining forces to support one fantastic cause. Beginning June 24, 2014, Love, Honor, & Hope, an anthology of eight full-length novels, will be available for 30 days at the low price of $0.99. That’s right, just 99 pennies. The best part is that 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the United States War Veteran’s PTSD Foundation.

LHH_OOBAteaser

PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, affects approximately 19% of the military men and women returning from Afghanistan and Iraq—and that’s just those who have been diagnosed. The percentage is expected to grow as more of our military members seek treatment. It’s a heartbreaking trend for the men and women who sacrifice so much for our freedoms, especially with benefits being cut and promotions being threatened.

LHH_SMteaser

The United States War Veteran’s PTSD Foundation is a non-profit charity that focuses on providing FREE care to combat military members, both active and veterans. They can’t do it alone, which is why we’ve made the decision to step up and do something. All eight of the authors have their personal reasons for supporting this cause.
Cherime MacFarlane, author of Heart of the Hunter said, “For me, it’s the way a very quiet man, my uncle, receded into the background whenever a family function took place. I did understand he came back from WWII that way. A young man, easy going and quick to laugh became a recluse. My father also served in WWI, as did a second uncle who returned far from the mischievous young man he was before the war claimed his youth. I was a young mother during the Vietnam era. I had friends who did not come back from Vietnam. I had other friends who did come home but were permanently damaged by the things they saw. For me, this is an opportunity to give back something to the men who served their country when the call came. My uncles and father are gone now, but I do hope, in some small way, to pay it forward for them. This is a tiny step, but as the man once said, every journey begins with that first step.”

AUTHOR BIO:
Sabrina Lacey used to shoot photography and for a while, fashion. She was like Diego, the photographer in I Love My Healed Heart who worked the tents at Fashion Week. It gave Sabrina all the insight she needed to create a fantastical tale about the glamorous lives those people don’t really live. 😉 Now she lives in Los Angeles, CA. with her dog Pippin. He wouldn’t comment for this bio. He’s an enigma, that one. A tiny, fluffy, white Maltese, enigma who captured her heart and ran with it. She however would like to say that she loves you for coming along for the ride.  Cheers and Happy Reading!

Hands: tight on the wheel.
Eyes: narrow slits locked on the third floor window.
Mind: invidious machinations swirling ‘round.
________
People don’t know that at night when the lights are on inside, it’s like they’re on a T.V. screen for the whole outside world to see. And I watched. I watched as she opened the curtains. I watched as she talked to him over her shoulder, laughing. I stared up at her face as she drew a fucking heart on the glass and nearly made me scream and run into the hospital to drag her out by her hair.

What can I do to end this bullshit? What can I do? This can’t be happening. There must be a way to get rid of her. To make things go back to how they were.

Did Brendan mean what he said? Did he tell Tommy not to see me tonight? I would think he would have called. I pick up my phone and check it, but there are only calls I’m still avoiding from back home; Bree and Deanna asking about the banquet we’re planning, Louise wondering why I’ve not responded and what should she do next with the community garden project proposal, and the cat sitter wondering where I am.

With every cell in my being, I want to see Tommy for more reasons than to just piss Brendan off. I need his hands on me to let me know I’m not too old to be wanted. That I’m not a castaway left behind for the next generation of women. And I need to do something with this anger because it is eating me alive. I need to fuck it out. I need to fuck someone and I need to fuck someone, hard. And not just any someone. I need to fuck the one person Brendan wouldn’t want me to.

I don’t give a flying shit if it’s a bad idea. Or if Tommy’s too young for me, too. Or if Brendan will be furious. Those are all perfect reasons to fly into the hands of the devil, for all I care.

Putting my car into gear, I throw one more look up to the window, before pulling out and heading back to The Inn.

If Tommy doesn’t show up, I don’t know what I’ll do.

SPOTLIGHT Into The Woods by Kathleen Kerridge

10410137_758418404208410_1716555195540301994_n

SYNOPSIS:

“Do you think you can protect them all?”
Eden listened to the sharply accented voice, wrapped his arms around himself, and stared out across the sea, watching the waves and the moonlight glinting off the surface of the water.
“You don’t have the power to save them all from me. You’re a child, and I am powerful.”
He nodded, sitting on the bonnet of his car, eyes on the water. It was pointless to argue—Jaizel was every bit as powerful as he thought he was.
“They have nothing you need,” he murmured. “There’s nothing they can give you. Why don’t you just let them go? Leave them to be free and live their lives?”
“Where would be the fun in that, little child from the Human Realm? They belong to me. I will do with them as I choose.”

Always feeling outside of things, Eden has never quite fit in. Out of his time, place and comfort zone, he lives inside his head, dreaming of fantasy realms, and other places.
But his dreams speak back. A voice, calling him from the darkness, as well as shadowy touches and ghostly kisses, are all Eden has to keep him going during the long, dull days. Fantasies of meeting the man behind the disembodied voice carry him through the hours he has to spend at college, the monotony of his weekend job at the local store, and the constant bullying, taunts and the – all too familiar – visits to a shrink to ‘talk about’ his habit of being a little bit psychic and telepathic.
After all, it’s not normal to answer questions that people have only been thinking in their heads. It’s not that normal to keep searching the local woods for fairies and Fae-Folk, either. And passing out in class, seeing flashes of all possibles futures has left people thinking he is mental.
Running from the local gang who have made it their life’s work to beat him up and humiliate him, Eden finally breaks through a divide so old it is only thought of in myth and stories, and finds himself in the Elven Realm. A place, he soon realises, he should have been in all along, although some of the reactions he gets from the Fae he meets are a bit strange.
Desperate to search for the voice inside his head, he convinces the Borderlands Guard, Takana, to allow him to stay in the Elven Realm and not send him back across the river. Whisked through the lands to a Citadel as old as time, he begins to wake up within himself and soon finds he is swept up in a whirlwind of emotion and forces unknown – and finds himself desperately in love with the tall blonde elf who saves his life and has haunted his dreams.
Knowing Khari for the other half of himself, Eden is helpless against the forces gathering against him. For the first time in his life, he has friends to protect, and a love he is willing to die for, all while trying to come to terms with the idea that he may not be who he thought he was. In fact, he might be more special than anything he could have believed himself to be.
Hunted by those who would have his power, and trying to hide from evil, Eden finds himself running through the worlds in the hope he can escape his fate and lead the future down a path that will not mean the destruction of the Realms, and will keep Khari at his side, and in his bed.

MEET THE AUTHOR:

I am a 36 year old ex office-manager who has had a passion for writing and reading everything and anything for as long as I can remember. I have the unfortunate (or fortunate) problem of finding imaginary friends who speak to me, keep me up all night, and beg me to tell their stories. I am now at the point where I have started to talk back to them, wondering if I finally turned that all important corner into total madness (instead of simply being a little bit insane, you understand).

I currently have a book available on Kindle, which has been a labour of love for me. It took me a long time to feel able to put my work ‘out there’, but now it is done, I feel that the time is right for me to take the next step on my journey and commit myself to the voices in my head.

All RATED R for language

MAN ON

A handful of fresh-faced young Americans interspersed in the group, which made Nicco feel old. Which totally pissed him off. What was Inez thinking anyway? There were two players per position in the room, two strong contenders for each spot—except his. He sipped his water bottle and glared at the Germans. Nervous tension gnawed at his gut but he kept his face calm. Finally when their temporary coach showed up and flipped the blinds closed, he relaxed.

So everyone in the room has to fight for their spot except me? That works.

He dropped his feet to the floor at Rafe’s pointed glance and propped his elbows on the table prepared to ignore the forthcoming pep talk.

He’d already made plans for the night and wanted to rest up beforehand. This goofy welcome pep talk would be as good a time as any. Letting his thoughts wander to the nightclub promising full discretion, he made himself stop obsessing over the failed therapy session.

The door clicked open and all eyes landed on the tall, blond man who walked in,backpack on his shoulder, dressed to play. Nicco’s scalp tingled at the sight of him—strong torso, long legs, firm jaw covered with several days’ worth of fuzz.

Good Christ but he was a perfect specimen.

Nicco kept his casual stance but startled when the kid’sbright blue eyes and huge white smile landed on him.He resisted the urge to smile back. Something about the man made Nicco distinctly uncomfortable. He suddenly wished he’d held onto the shrink’s business card.

“And Parker will be working with you, Nicco.”

He sat up, knocking his water to the floor as Rafe’s words got his immediate attention. He stared at the polite hand the kid stuck in his face then over at Rafe. His throat closed up between the proximity of the impossibly handsome man andrealization of the fact that the vision of masculine perfection he’d lusted after for the lastfew seconds wanted to take his spot on the field.

Oh hell no.

He leaned back again and ignored his inner polite self. Instead, he smirked, ignored the punk, and turned to face their coach as if suddenly fascinated by what the guy had to say. Parker stood a minute, and Nicco watched his face turn red before he sat in the one empty chair nearest the door.

Rafe passed out new phones, reminded them of their obligation to “tweet” and “post profile updates” on Facebook at least three times a day. All shit Nicco already knew. Rafe’s hot young lady assistant issued key cards to the ones who’d just arrived, including the kid Nicco studiously ignored but whose very presence was making the front of his jeans uncomfortable.

RED CARD

“It’s your hips that are the problem.”

Alicia startled at the sound of his now-familiar, sing-song accent. She’d been kicking a line of balls into the net, one after the other for about fifteen minutes since she’d been early in her haste to get the hell out of her house and away from her sister’s loud disapproval.

Taking a breath, she crossed her arms and studied him. Metin wore a pair of dark blue soccer shorts, plain heather-gray shirt, and cleats, as easily as he’d worn the dress pants and crisp cotton shirt the night she’d met him—the night you fucked him, you mean.

He stood, loose-limbed, at ease in his element. His teeth glowed against his dark skin. The eyes she had melted into not forty-eight hours ago shone with something she couldn’t identify—happiness? Sarcasm? Lust? Who knew? Hoping to hide her frustration, she bent down to tie her laces tighter so he couldn’t see her face flush when her gaze hit the front of his shorts.

She rose, determined to resist the take-me-now aura the guy threw her way. He probably didn’t even realize he did it. Not anymore. “Okay, I’ll bite. What’s wrong with my hips?”

“Come at me.”

She blinked, confused. “Um, huh?”

“Attack, make like you want to score. You know? Like you do in games?”

“Oh, right.” Dropping the ball tucked under her arm, she glanced over his shoulder at her target. He let her, trotting backward a few steps, then made for the ball. She feinted, maintaining possession before dribbling a few more feet.

He came out of nowhere as she was about to make her final scoring charge, stripping her of the ball and sending her crashing to the turf.

“Ow. Shit,” she muttered, getting to her feet, a familiar, angry competitiveness stripping all the horniness right out of her head. “I still don’t get what….”

“Do it again.” He kicked the ball toward her, harder than necessary, but she stopped it and placed her cleat on top contemplating a different strategy.

Shifting to the side, she danced past him, using all the speed she could muster, and headed straight for the goal. And there he was again, taking the damn ball away from her as if she were a rookie.

She tried to shield it, putting her back to him and sensing every inch of his warm, perfect physique against her skin. Forcing herself to focus, she landed a hard elbow to his midsection and escaped his trap then traveled down the field alone, turning on all her motors, no longer hearing anything, way into her zone.

And then, the damn man appeared in front of her again, batting the ball between her legs and taking off in the other direction, hand to his side where she’d nailed him.

“God damn it, Metin. What is your point? You’re a pro. I’m an unemployed college graduate. You’re a man. I’m not. You make money at this, and I never will. What the hell are you trying to prove?” Her legs hurt from her workout the day before and she could barely catch her breath. She was, in a word, miserable. But the sight of him a few yards away, messing with the soccer ball while he stared at her, brought visions of tackling him, holding him down, and kissing him right to the front of her overheated brain. She turned away, ready to escape.

“Once more.” The soccer ball smacked the back of her legs so hard she yelped. “That’s your fucking yellow card for the elbow. One more and you’ll sit.”

SHUT OUT

“Vaughn! Goddamn it.”

Brody sat, staring at his feet, ignoring the usual post-match noise and bustle around him. Most especially he hoped to hide from the voice of Rafael Inez, the club’s manager. Reminders of how poorly he’d performed today were not going to help him. He’d been playing soccer in some capacity since he walked, since he had memories of anything. And today had been among his worst, ever.

From the streets of Nashville and the hills of East Tennessee, he’d been on teams, in clubs, trained by himself, trained by pros, the whole goddamned nine yards. He’d seen every sort of match condition, coaching, officiating misstep, and parental overreaction. He realized what it meant to suck serious ass. And he understood why he’d done just that today, too—hence the dark clouds draping his consciousness

The team manager drew closer, his deep voice joined by another, as a sort of bonus, really. He leaned against the dark wood lining the walls in the over-the-top, fancy locker room.

Metin Sevim, the Turkish coach, once a Spanish league phenom, had had the world at his feet until a horrific tragedy struck, leaving him drunk and useless for years. Apparently recovered, he had a look on his face Brody Vaughn caught loud and clear—the “we lost and it is pretty much your fault but I don’t want to upset you too much” glare that coaches the world over affected.

Exhausted in mind and spirit, sick of the chewing out before it even started, Brody gazed at both men. Rafe’s snapping eyes reflected the same expression as Metin’s. He opened his mouth first, but the Turk put a hand on his arm. The men regarded each other as the swirl of post-match activity came to a loud peak.

Players in various stages of undress wandered in and out of the main locker room, grabbing towels, pulling on the dress pants, shirts, and ties the club required of them when entering and leaving the facility. One thing Brody would say about the former-hot-headed, player-turned-failure-turned-coach, Metin knew when not to talk. He tilted his head, still pinning Brody with something that faded from this is your fault to what the hell is wrong with you?

Then he sighed and, to Brody’s surprise, dropped onto the chair next to him, leaned forward, elbows on knees, and seemed to examine the expensive, rubberized floor. Brody hadn’t even made it to the shower yet. He felt so weighed down and lethargic, just lifting his arms to put his head in his hands took more energy than existed on the planet. He knew why, along with the fact that there wasn’t a thing to be done about it.

How would he even begin to describe his issue? Heart pounding, legs aching, shoulder screaming where he’d landed on it, then waved away the trainer at the sixty-fifth minute. By that time all of the players were pretty gassed from the late summer heat, but held on, toe-to-toe, with the Canadian national team in a friendly. The stupid, sneaky forward had seen him wincing, favoring his left shoulder, and drove the ball in on his newly weakened side. It had been a simple fifty-fifty ball; face to face. He had blown it, him and his overpaid, lame ass, wobbly self.

Thanks to his one quick encounter with the front office legal woman, he’d been left in a quivering, useless, uncertain heap of need. Fuck that. He had to get a grip.

BLOG TOUR and REVIEW Better as a Memory by Marilyn Baxter

BLURB

Atlanta image consultant Victoria Sharpe is about to give a makeover to the man who broke her heart in college, and a do-over to a love that always should have been.

SYNOPSIS:

Looking at her potential client, Atlanta image consultant Victoria Sharpe is convinced the job will be a cross between What Not to Wear and Man vs. Wild. She’d love to turn down the offer, but refusing it—not to mention the referrals it could generate—just might break the bank. Yet, agreeing to make over this man’s image might also break her heart. Again.

Max Brown will tolerate anything to gain access to his trust fund. Returning to work in the family business, even submitting to his mother’s demands to trade his comfortable flannel for Armani is worthwhile if he can get the money necessary to start a camp for at-risk boys. But then he sees he’ll be working with Victoria Sharpe, his college girlfriend, the one who got away. Or, really, the one he left. The impression he makes here will be the most important of his life, and the person most as risk is himself.

MY REVIEW:
This is a sweet, pretty uninvolved and speedy read and I would highly recommend this!
I have loved spending a nice afternoon in my sunny garden with Victoria and Max.  This is a sweet tale of rediscovery and opening of old wounds.  Victoria needs her new contract to help Max and his new image in order to survive financially.  But emotionally you see that she may not survive this.   The deeper you delve into the history between her and Max, the more you have to sympathise with the situation she is in.
At first I found Max to be pretty cold hearted and focussed purely on himself an his goals but as the book went on I warmed to him immensely.  He has clear goals and none of those feature anyone with him as he achieves them.  And how will Victoria fit into those plans, if at all?
The connection between the couple is instant as they reconnected as friends and emotionally.  The tension sexually and otherwise between the two of them feels very real in the book and I loved how they developed individually as they opened up to each other.  The ending however very nearly broke my heart.  You will have to read the book to find out what happens.
This is a really refreshing change for me and was a perfect light sunny afternoon read!  his was my first book by this author and I will definitely be reading more!
5 sunny afternoon Stars!

Also, she has taught a class in how to
effectively write for this genre and worked as a researcher and copy editor for
several Romance authors. All this combined to give her a great love of the
Romance genre and helped develop a multitude of friendships in the Romance
community.

In addition to reading, Marilyn loves to knit (as long as it’s only a scarf), cook (in the crockpot), garden (in a couple of pots on her patio), and her motto is “Have passport, will travel.” She’d love to add to the list of 32 states and 21 foreign countries she’s already visited.
After raising two great sons, she loves to spoil… er… dote on her two granddaughters.

NEW RELEASE Unconditional Love by Kelly Elliott

SYNOPSIS:
Lark Williams leads a fast-paced life, always on the edge of danger. Running from his past
and fighting to keep his present life a secret, he keeps his heart out of reach from love. The walls he built around himself come crumbling down when he meets Azurdee Emerson.
Azurdee lives a peaceful life in the small town of Wimberley, Texas. Her tame world quickly becomes heated as she begins to fall in love with Lark. He’s everything she has
vowed to stay away from—dark and mysterious, and not to mention, sexy as hell and full of secrets.
Just as Lark and Azurdee give in to their feelings of love, Lark’s present life threatens the
safety of the one person he would sacrifice his own happiness for. When Lark finds history repeating itself, he makes a decision that will forever change both of their lives, leaving one heartbroken and lost and the other fighting to survive.

EXCERPT:

“Azurdee? Honey, we have a slight problem and need you right away!”
Ari yelled from the front porch.
I gave Paul a weak smile and said, “I have to run but maybe I’ll talk to you soon.” I quickly turned and headed toward Ari, who was standing there giving me a shit-eating grin.
Ari was one of Jessie’s closest friends here in Mason, along with Ellie, Heather, and Amanda. They were all friends but acted more like sisters. I stopped right in front of
her and asked, “How did you know I needed
rescuing?”
She gave me a Cheshire cat grin and said, “Please, bitch, I saw the way you and Lark were dancing earlier. Too bad your date didn’t notice the hotness between the two of you on the dance floor. I knew you were trying to ditch the date and I was pretty sure when I saw him roll down that window he was asking if you would like to meet for coffee sometime?”
I chuckled and said, “It was dinner.”

Ari rolled her eyes and said, “Stupid bastard must have been the only one to not see you and Lark practically humping on the dance floor.”
“Oh my God, Ari! It wasn’t that bad…was it?”
She gave me an evil smile and said, “Let’s just say I’m wishing I would have started a bet among the girls because I have a feeling someone is going to be coming over to the…”
Ari looked around and then looked back at me
and whispered, “My-cherry-was-popped side.”
My mouth dropped open and I stood there frozen. “I just don’t even know what to say to that, Ari.”
“I get that a lot. Okay, just make sure the bastard gives you an orgasm before he sticks his…”
I held up my hands and said, “Please stop! Really, I think I’m going to be okay without your…tips.”
Ari laughed and said, “Okay, seriously though, it does help you relax.
Are you on the pill? Please tell me you are at least on the pill.”
My heart started pounding and my hands started sweating. “Um…yeah, since college. Just to be safe. I dated a guy in college for a while and thought he might be the one but turns out he was far from the one.”
Ari’s mouth dropped open. “You haven’t had a boyfriend since college?
My God Azurdee, do you just not like men?”
I laughed and pushed her back some. “Yes, bitch, I like men. I just haven’t met a guy who did it for me. One that made me want to give myself completely to him until…”
Ari wiggled her eyebrows up and down and said, “Mysterious and handsome Lark Williams has though, hasn’t he?”
I let out a sigh and walked over to the porch swing and sat down.
“Oh my God, Ari. I don’t know what it is, but when I’m around him my body just goes into overdrive and I have to do everything in my power to keep from jumping him. It’s been like this from the beginning. I’ve dreamt about him, I’ve thought about him while driving, working, out onother dates. I cannot get him out of my head. He is my weakness.”
Ari sat down and gave me a weak smile. “Is it just a sexual thing? I mean…do you have other feelings for him?”
I nodded my head. “No, it’s not just sexual. I mean, a big part of it is of course, and the fact that I pretty much threw myself at him tonight has my stomach dropping. But there’s more to it. When he enters a room, I swear I have to take a deep breath. He brushes by me or touches me in the slightest way and my stomach flips around like I’m on a damn thrill ride. His eyes…oh my God. I get totally lost in them. I swear—if he had told me to strip down and let him make love to me on the dance floor, I would have done it.”
