review

For this event I have read and reviewed all four of the Love Series books including Let Me Love You all of which I’m going to post here!

Trying Not To Love You (Book #1) Five star review!

OMG WHAT A CLIFFHANGER and seriously had I not started reading this as part of the blog tour for book four in this series I would seriously be hunting Megan down and shouting at her for leaving it like that!!!

Anyway, back to the issue at hand and my review…

We meet Kenzie (later known as CC) who has been in love with Hunter for forever. Problem is he is best of friends with her twin brothers and we all know how overbearing and protective they can be! And therein lies the major roadblock to true love!!

This story isn’t what you actually expect from the blurb in a lot of ways and although you do know the feeling of attraction between Hunter and Kenzie is mutual the path of true love doesn’t run smoothly. In fact far from it and the addition of Dominic, Kenzie’s Boyfriend, in to the mix guarantees things will never be straight-forward!

It is a great mix of funny, sweet and angsty and I actually love the way Megan writes too. The dynamic between Kenzie and Hunter is addictive (swoonworthy and steamy too) and you really feel like you know and are part of the characters lives when reading it!

The ending of the book was, well let me just say unexpected and OMG (I’ll say it again) OMG I’m just glad book two is already out!

On that note I’m off now to devour the next book and et some freaking closure!!!

Five “OM freaking G” stars from me!

Easy To Love You (Book #2) Five Star Review

Well thankfully for Megan, this book picks up right where the last one left and we are thrown into the ongoing story of CC and Hunter and the crap storm surrounding the ending in the last book. Oh how I want to say more but for anyone who hasn’t read this series I will try my bet to review this without spoiling it!

We learn an awful lot more about Hunter and his background in this book along with a web of deceit and lies that has shadowed both CC’s and Hunters lives so far. This book goes a long way to explaining why CC’s brothers are so overbearing and also gives us an insight into Mason and his feelings too. This is important as this leads us into the next book (his and Hailey’s story).

I have loved the continuation of the story and also how this book really develops a lot of the characters other than Hunter and CC and also it throws I a few well-placed curveballs too!

This instalment has had me in tears, laughing and also as frustrated as anything at the actions of particularly Hunter and especially CC who for goodness sake needs a slap and tethering to Hunter – she runs faster than winner in the 100m sprint at times and she really got my goat! Although when Hunter is being, well Hunter, you can’t actually blame her!

I loved this sort of conclusion to Hunter and CC’s story and hope that in the next books in the series we get to see more of them. One character I wish would disappear is Brittany though but I have the feeling she is more involved than anyone would like her to be!!! Now we need to tackle part three – Mason and Hailey’s story…!

Another 5 star read for me!

Hard to Love You (Book #3) Five star review

Well well well we now get to see a lot more inside Mason’s head and get to see what makes him tick a lot batter and honestly, I didn’t actually like what I saw for a lot of it!!

Hailey has a past. A pretty horrid past and we know a little of what she has had to cope with but we truly find out how deeply she is affected by a mix of her flashbacks and her insecurities! We also find hidden secrets between her and Mason too and realize just how deep the two of them are in it!

She is taken well and truly under the wing of the Cahills and knows that they will do anything to get each other’s back. This is until Mason hears something and will go to every length to try and protect his family, including losing her.

And you know what? The secret isn’t as groundbreaking as you might expect and certainly not worth losing your soul mate over. This is the first of Megan’s books where I felt like truly flinging my kindle in the pool (yes I’m on holiday and oh yes it was so tempting at times to launch the flaming thing in the water!).

Mason. Mason, Mason… – he had a lot of crap to go through in this book and also made a crap tonne of mistakes but aside from that I think Hailey seems to have caught the speedy 100m running bug from her BFF because she rarely hung around either to let the dust settle and hear Mason out.

Although I found it uber frustrating being a spectator in the disaster that was Hailey and Mason I did love the insight into the other characters and in particular the wedding (wont tell you whose – read the darn book for that!) and more about a lot of the other side characters too!

Oh and Lily can also just do one and bugger off too!

I ummed and ahhhed about what to rate this instalment but in the end I’m still seething over some of the things that happened in the book and to be honest that tipped the balance to leaving it a five star review – mainly because damn you Megan the ending was fab but I’m still annoyed at Mason!

Let Me Love You (Book #4) Four star review

You have got to be kidding me – another flaming cliffhanger!! And this time I’m having to wait to read the next book! Frustrated much?!

I have loved the snippets that we have already seen of this couple though and Jay and Cooper are obviously so into each other but you find out a lot more in this book as to why Cooper holds himself back.

Jay has been hiding something from everyone and once you finally realise just what she has had to handle, you can’t help but be sympathetic. She is so strong and at times during this book I was proud of how she just dusted herself off and was strong enough to just keep going! At last! A girl with balls!

Cooper on the other hand has serious issues and I was getting as frustrated with him as I was with Mason in the last book! What is it with these stupid Cahill men and their emotional flaming reservations! Get some backbones and grow a pair of hairy ones!!

I have loved the fact that the other characters feature really heavily in all of the books and although tis particular storyline was probably the most frustrating one for me yet (and with the next book a long way off I’m still reeling a little here!) I think it is redeemed a bit with the highlights of the new additions to the respective families and the peek that we get into the others lives too!

I think for me this is going to go down as a four star read this time – I think mainly because I need closure and am not happy at having to wait yet again on a cliffhanger but also because as I mentioned earlier this was by far the most frustrating of the books so far!

4 very frustrated but happy stars!

Excerpt:

“Yo man, have you seen Jay?” I ask Eli who came to the party with us.
He shakes his head, “Last I saw she was sitting on the couch over there with Kevin.”
My stomach drops. Kevin’s the campus drug dealer. He used to be a tight end for the football team in our freshman year at college but was kicked off the team after drugs were found in his dorm. He’s from New Jersey too, but he lived up north and actually went to high school with Eli in Hoboken. Eli said he used to be really popular until he started hanging out with the wrong crowd.
I drop my arm from around Courtney, the girl I was planning on taking home, and go to try and find Jaylinn. Fuck, I knew I shouldn’t have brought her with me but I couldn’t tell her no. All that girl has to do is bat her eye lashes
and I’d cave.
I search the whole downstairs of the frat house for her and Kevin but they are nowhere to be seen. Panic starts to set in, chilling me to the bone. I race up the stairs, three on the right, three on the left and one straight back. The first door opens and some guy is standing there that I don’t recognize, pulling a shirt over his head. I check the bed to make sure Jaylinn isn’t there. I do this to the next five doors; all were opened and occupied but Jaylinn wasn’t in any of them. I get to the last door on the left; it’s dark so I reach around the wall for a light switch. I flick it on and the room is empty.
“Where the fuck is she?” I roar.
I slam the door shut and stamp to the last door. My heart rate spikes causing a swooshing sound in my ears, my body shakes with rage. I turn the door knob, it’s locked. I bang on it, “Jaylinn,” Nothing, complete silence.
Something isn’t right. My stomach knots and I try banging on the door a few times, hoping someone is just passed out and can’t hear me. After a minute I can’t take it anymore and I ram my shoulder into the door. Once, twice, and finally it gives way.
My heart stops, I can’t breathe and my vision blurs.

review
Heartbreaking, gutting and totally absorbing!  This has been one hell of a ride and the emotions I have felt during this book have made me feel almost dizzy!  This is such a gritty tale of love so deep that you can’t see beyond it.  Dusty and Bliss have almost broken me for reading anything else.  I have just finished this and honestly cannot put into words how I feel and that in itself is a testament to the writing!
This is not a book for the feint hearted and certainly not a sweet and mushy tale of love and romance.  In fact I would go as far as to say it pushed a lot of limits for me and that is saying something.  Lies, deceit, dishonesty – everything you don’t want in a character but somehow it works to rile you up and want to read more!  I definitely need the next book to release like now although I am not actually wanting them to end up together.   At all! WHy and how?!?! I am all over the place with this!!!
Dusty pushed my emotions and I must admit I didn’t like him but somehow had a distant empathy almost of how he is and why but he makes the story what it is.  He isn’t likeable even although you do get glimpses of what he could be and that he is good somewhere deep inside.
I can also say that I have never been a fan of Fanfic but think I have found a book that may well have changed my view on that! I’m still reeling and must admit for the fact that I will not stop thinking about this book for a LONG time it deserves a full 5 fab stars just for totally wrecking me!

Front windows cracked, we’re relaxed in the back of his parents’ old Audi and it feels good again.
“Caffeine isn’t good for you, you know,” Thomas says, glancing over.
The sun has set and the purple sky and the Yaquina lighthouse paint my temperamental troublemaker in soft hues. The scent and sounds of the sea drift in with the breeze, mixing with smoke from the blunt he’s relit and the low melodies of Citizen Cope singing about a girl that won’t give in and he’ll never let go of.
Taking another drink of the coffee he bought me, I shrug. I don’t know what he said to get the baristas to make a pumpkin spice latte in February, but cinnamon and caffeine fill me with warm relief.
Under his breath and around a hit, Thomas chuckles.
“It’s bad for your bones and skin,” he says, smirking as I tuck my toes under his leg. “And your heart. Uncontrolled beats are a prelude to heart attack, princess.”
I roll my eyes and laugh some, because I do feel them. I felt them earlier in his bed, and before that, when I was thinking of him. My unsteady heartbeats have nothing to do with coffee.
“Bring on the palpitations,” I say before taking another drink, letting Dusty lecture me about bad habits, as if I’m too young to understand irony.
“I’m serious,” he continues, smoking up and blowing out. “Your body will build a tolerance. When you feel it’s becoming bad for you, you’ll want more. You’ll need more. Caffeine’s a drug, Leigh.”
I laugh. I can’t help it. Maybe I’m still high.
“Oh yeah?” I ask. “Like pot?”
This boy blows a cloud of smoke up, and I watch it swirl-spread out across the car’s ceiling.
“Pot’s from the earth,” he says, puffing smoke rings while I wrap both hands around my cup, absorbing its warmth through my palms. I inhale the cream-sweet scent of cinnamon and nutmeg and ginger, and it may be full of stimulants, but I feel calm.
Thomas’ presence is the best Valentine’s Day gift. Candy is nice, and candy flavored blunt wraps were thoughtful, but this is what I wanted most. Just us.
“Pumpkins are from the earth,” I say. “And coffee beans.”
“You think there’s real pumpkin in that?” he asks. When I can’t do more than smile and stare at his lips, he sits up straighter.
“Caffeine’s an analeptic. It fucks with your impulse control and your insulin resistance.”
I laugh because, “What?”
He pulls a hit. “That shit will give you stress hormones, Bliss.”
“How do you know all this?”
“Baseball.”
We’re quiet for a second, looking at each other. His carefreeness is back, but his smile is understated.
“You sure you’re not worried it’ll stunt my growth?”
Between licking his bottom lip and bringing the blunt back up, Dusty glances at my chest without a stitch of modesty.
“You’re growing up fine, girl.”
My cheeks heat, and I hide my smile with another drink.
After I’ve finished my coffee, Thomas offers me the blunt. When I decline, my actual addiction leans into me, nudges his hood from my head, and exhales his smoke all over my neck.
The playful punk that was lecturing me is gone. This honest to a fault, recklessly unflinching, too-beautiful, fated youth is a person only I know. This is my person.
He tosses the blunt out the window while I drop my empty cup to the floorboard, and we shift together. We kiss open and deep, claiming and binding. We kiss the way I wanted to earlier, with eyes closed and hearts open, and I know the real drug is here. It’s between us and inside us.
It’s the way he opens my lips with his lips to kiss me deeper, and the way my pulse feels like his name is in my veins.
It’s the way I can’t stay hurt or mad or jealous, and the way he can’t stand for me to.
It’s the craving that never goes away, the need for more that grows as we feed it. It’s the tolerance he was talking about and knowing he’s right.
It’s this, our secret.
We’re the drug.

excerpt

“You just gonna hide out here all day baby girl?” Alec’s smooth voice fills my ears just moments later, startling me. I shoot my head up and pin my eyes on my oldest brother. He smiles at me lovingly and takes a couple more steps down the dock until he is standing just feet from where I am laying

“If it means avoiding Ian’s taunting for a few minutes longer, then yes.” I say, smiling widely at him. He nods, knowing full well what I mean and closes the distance between us. He sits down next to me, his long legs stretched out in front of him.

I pull my sunglasses down onto the bridge of my nose and peer up at him. While Ian made it out to my graduation with mom, I have not seen Alec in almost a year. Even still, time has not changed him. He looks almost exactly as I remembered him. Rumpled brown hair that hangs across his forehead, his large toned frame dressed in tan cargo shorts and a white t-shirt. He crosses his muscled arms in front of his broad chest and meets my gaze.

“How are you Grace?” He asks. “I mean really.” He adds, knowing full well that I will tell him everything is wonderful no matter what is going on with my life. Even with that knowledge, he still pushes for the truth. Unlike Ian, Alec has always had a way of reading me, even if he doesn’t admit it.

While Ian is my cute, playful, snowboard loving, free spirited, artist of a brother. Alec is the more serious one. While I like to think that I know him well, like me, I know that he never truly lets people in. But he is my protector. The one who stepped into my father’s shoes even though he was already away at college when dad passed. Being ten years older than me, he has always been very protective of me and that fact increased one hundred fold when he became the eldest man in the family.

“I’m good.” I finally answer, sighing loudly and resting my chin on hand. “How’s New York?” I ask. While the main reason I am moving there is for Emma, it doesn’t hurt that my oldest brother also resides there and will give me some sense of home in the craziness that is New York. “How’s the business?” I tack on, referring to the software development company that he started a few years back with his college roommate. While he doesn’t brag, I know that they have managed to be very successful. Creating and selling various apps for smart phones and other devices.

“It’s good.” He says, being completely modest by how well he has done for himself. I mean, I don’t know what kind of money a business like that brings in but from the way mom describes his downtown penthouse, I would say he makes more than he would ever need.

“Sorry I couldn’t make it out to see you graduate. Hell, I barely got away to come here for the week.” He shrugs. “We both know mom would have killed me.” I can only nod my head in agreement, knowing full well that my mother would have been heartbroken had he not been able to make the trip. None of us has missed a year yet.

“No worries. It wasn’t that big of a deal. Besides, my part lasted a whopping thirty seconds. The rest of the time you would have had to sit there and listen to them call out hundreds of names and I can only imagine how dreadfully boring that would have been for you.”

“It would have been worth it baby girl. You’re a college graduate now. That’s something to be very proud of.” He says, smiling down at me.

I shrug. “Yeah I guess. I’m just glad it’s over honestly. I mean, it was a great experience and all but I am ready to start living my life. College was just a necessary step. I need publishing houses to take me seriously, having an English major is the first step in achieving that.”

“Hey Alec.” A man’s voice I don’t recognize interrupts us. I twist my head to the side and instantly my mouth falls open. Holy hell. Zayne Evans. My brothers college roommate and best friend has always been a looker but I certainly was not prepared to lay my eyes upon the sex god that is now hovering just feet from where my inappropriately covered body is laying. “Your mom and Rob are here.” He says casually, his eyes finding mine for a fraction of a second before turning back to Alec.

“Thanks man.” Alec says, pushing himself to his feet. “Come on baby girl.” He says, holding his hands out to me. I push up on my knees, doing my best to make sure all areas are covered before taking his hands and letting him help me to my feet.

I turn, feeling ridiculously awkward and very self conscious, to face Zayne. The moment my eyes find him again, I have to mentally force myself not to drool. I haven’t seen him since he came home for Thanksgiving with Alec my senior year of high school. Even then he was something to admire but I was just a kid then. Now, words can’t even describe the man before me.

He’s tall, at least six feet or so. His shoulders are broad and his tight fitted gray t-shirt clings to every perfectly defined muscle across his chest and stomach. When my eyes finally make it to his face, I falter. Oh my god, this man is beyond gorgeous. How do I not remember him being so beautiful? Piercing blue eyes with lashes so thick that the shade is only that much more intense. His dark hair is short and messy and has what Emma would call ‘the just fucked look’. Instantly I am envisioning running my hands through his hair, pulling his body flush with mine and kissing him hard. I take a shaky inhale and try to gather my barrings. I have not thought about a man in that way since Kyle and the thought is more than a little unsettling.

“Zayne right?” The question sounds stupid but considering it’s been five years, it doesn’t seem completely ridiculous.

“Good to see you again Grace.” He nods, his smooth voice dripping with seduction. His eyes rake over my nearly naked torso and then back to my face before he quickly turns back to Alec. The action causing my insides to bubble.

“I’ll see you up there.” He says, quickly turning and making his way back up the steps, two at a time. I can’t help but watch him. The way his back flexes with each step, his massive calve muscles clenching with the movement.

BLOG TOUR and REVIEW Meeting Miss Mystic by Kate Regnery

BLURB:

Both emotionally and physically scarred from an accident, Zoe Flannigan must take a journey to meet Paul Johansson—and to discover a love as beautiful and boundless as the wide Montana sky.

SYNOPSIS:

 INSIDE & OUT

High school principal Paul Johansson has never been lucky in love, which is too bad, because few men in Montana are more naturally romantic. Then his friend Maggie signs him up for Internet dating, and while Paul is initially furious, he’s soon blown away by Holly Morgan, a blonde, blue-eyed art teacher from Connecticut. She might just be the girl of his dreams.

Zoe Flannigan—aka Holly Morgan—totally forgot about the account she set up two years ago on Meet-the-One.com. In fact, after an accident that left her physically and emotionally scarred, she hasn’t been up for meeting or dating anyone. Until Paul. Handsome, sweet, and too-good-to-be-true… But while the built-in anonymity of the Internet offers a buffer, she can’t hide in cyberspace forever, either from Paul’s expectations or from herself. There’s a journey she must take, and at the end of it will be a love as beautiful and boundless as the wide Montana sky.

review

I loved the concept for this book and the synopsis had me intrigued! This is the first book I have read by Kate Regnery and it forms part of a series.  I wondered if I would struggle seeing as I haven’t read any of the other books but it is a beautiful book and I needn’t have been concerned.

A little slow to get in full swing and with a clever and quite surprising twist, it soon piqued my interest and I loved the online dating concept (as, to be honest, it is now a popular way of meeting people in real life!).

We meet Zoe/Holly (Miss Mystic) and Paul (Principlepaul) who both have their issues, Zoe more so.  Paul is such a sweet gent and actually a nice change from the raw alpha men in a lot of contemporary books!  Zoe is so broken and feels unworthy of love and of life.

As with any romance, things not run smoothly 100% of the time but the rapport between the two is worth the read! The text and email exchanges between the two are funny and really make the situation come to life!

The supporting characters are well rounded and have really got me interested in reading more by Kate and I will definitely be one clicking a few more of her books!  Maggie too is a great friend and her efforts to help Paul are nothing short of persistent!

Well worth a read!

5 super stars!

EXCERPT:

Zoe didn’t realize she’d been holding her breath until it came out in a rush. Her heart pounded in her chest as she turned over the phone. How could something as impersonal as an e-mail be so affecting?

Her lips turned up in a slight smile as she savored the warmth and sincerity of his words. She was not surprised – Maggie had been so effusive, there was no way Paul was going to be another jerk – but, she was unprepared for the impact of reading his e-mail. She had assumed the physical distance between them would make him feel far away. Instead, it was like she’d just spent ten intimate minutes inside his head.

She sat back in the chair and let her damaged face bathe in the warmth of the sun for a moment as he had suggested, even though she knew it wasn’t a good idea. Until her final surgery in early October, it wasn’t smart to discolor the puckered, violet skin any further.

She thought about the girl in the photo that Paul must have finally seen last night. It had been taken three years ago at Sandy and Rob’s wedding even though Zoe knew it would have been far more honest to upload a recent picture of herself. In fact, she’d found a photo taken in the past few months – she wasn’t smiling, but at least it was in profile and didn’t show her bad side – but when she’d held the newer photo up to her computer screen, staring at the two incredibly different girls that were both Zoe, she couldn’t bear to do it. Swap out the photo of the trim, blond, sunny girl who used to be Zoe? For the heavier, black haired, dark eyed, tattooed, scarred disaster she’d become? Right. She’d never hear from him again, and for whatever reason, it really mattered to Zoe that she hear from him again.

She sighed. She knew she should delete Paul’s message, disable her account and leave him alone. He was a nice guy looking for love and she had no right to lead him on even the littlest bit. Yet when she visualized deleting his sweet e-mail and disabling her Meet-the-One account, a terrible heaviness threatened to edge in on the little bit of light she’d been enjoying.

Was exchanging a few e-mails really leading him on? It was more like being pen pals, especially if she was upfront about her intentions to be friends. She could tell him about her life in Connecticut and he could tell her about Montana and Yellowstone – get to know each other, just as he suggested. No more, no less. They couldn’t very well get romantic from so far away, could they? No, of course not. His e-mail only felt intimate because it had been so long since a man – a nice, decent man – had been so kind to her. It was impossible to be intimate from two thousand miles away. There was no reason to overthink it.

Halfway convinced that she wasn’t a horrible person for writing back and ignoring the guilt that wouldn’t quite leave her alone, Zoe picked up her phone and pressed reply.

‘Ohana is everything…

When an accident claims her mother’s life, Keahilani Alana must take charge of her `ohana(family) or risk losing what little they have. With an underage brother to care for and no education, she has few options. The door to a heavenly hellish opportunity opens when she stumbles upon a valuable secret her mother left behind on the slopes of an extinct volcano—a legacy that tempts the family with riches beyond their wildest dreams. But the secret is much bigger and more sinister than they realize. As reality unravels and exposes eerie truths about the ‘ohana that should have remained deep under the mountain, Keahilani must either resist the call of her blood or risk being consumed by its darkness.

Blake Murphy is an assassin working to infiltrate a new Hawaiian cartel. His investigation reveals that Keahilani, the sexy surfing instructor he pegged as an informant, is much closer to the drug ring than he thought. Passion ignites between them in the bedroom, but their ironclad ties to opposing interests pit them against each other everywhere else.

When tensions reach the breaking point and her ‘ohana is threatened, the only cure for Keahilani’s hot-blooded fury is a loaded clip with a body bag chaser.

They don’t call her Pele for nothing

Chapter One

Maui, 2008

“You think Bane will win this year?” Kai asked from the backseat. It was hard to hear him over the sputter of the coughing engine, but a tinge of uncertainty blurred his soft voice.

From the passenger seat, Keahilani glanced back at her twin. The wind from Mahina’s open window in front of him blew the sun-kissed brown hair from his face. His locks executed complicated flips like a drunk diver stumbling off the cliffs of Black Rock on Kāʻanapali Beach.

“Maybe.” Keahilani didn’t want to jinx their little brother’s chances, so she kept her thoughts to herself. Kai had always been the optimistic one who searched for the good in every situation. She considered herself practical above all else. In short, Kai hoped. Keahilani hedged.

That said, she had no doubt Bane would totally kill it in the surfing competition today.

“Absolutely,” Mahina said. Keahilani felt her mother’s smile rather than saw it. That’s how Mahina was. Energy rather than form. Larger than life. A force to be reckoned with. To those who didn’t know her, Mahina was intimidation made flesh. To her family, she was the epitome of love and respect with a sharp edge.

Years filled with alternating tragedies and triumphs had that hard-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside effect on a person.

Keahilani fumbled with her hair, wrestling the tangles from the wind’s clutches as she squinted into the sun. Damn car’s air conditioning hadn’t worked in ages, and Mahina probably wouldn’t have run it even if it did. She pinched pennies at the expense of the smallest comforts. Recycled water for gardening. No lights on during the day. Not a single bite of food wasted. Hell, the members of the household even took timed, lukewarm showers. Five minutes was all anyone ever got, birthdays included.

Keahilani sighed. As soon as she landed a higher-paying job, she’d help the family move out of government housing into something better. Her mother had given so much of herself to keep the ‘ohana strong. She deserved some reward for her struggles. They all did.

Mahina shoved one hand into the hemp bag lying between the bucket seats while the other maintained tenuous control of the steering wheel. She glanced away from the road a couple of times.

Sitting up, Keahilani swiped the thin sheen of sweat from her leg. God, this heat. “What do you need? I’ll get it.”

Mahina gently pushed her away and continued fumbling around in the bag.

“Keep your eyes on the road,” Keahilani gibed. Her mother always said the same when she drove.

Mahina paused her rifling as she rounded a sharp curve. “Bane told me that rude haole boy from Kihei—what’s his name? Josh something?—is the biggest competition this year. That little shit needs his ass handed to him.”

True. Josh beat Bane (barely) at their last surfing contest, and afterward he bragged about haole surfers being better than Natives. Mahina’s lip curled, and she bared her teeth over a growl. Keahilani had to physically restrain her from attacking the kid. Mahina could take a lot of crap, but when you brought her or her children’s heritage and/or wave-riding abilities into question, things were guaranteed to get ugly.

And they did. Josh ran to his mother and hid behind her. Keahilani was pretty sure he peed his pants too. Served him right.

Most people agreed religion, money, and politics were topics best avoided in social situations. Mahina’s top three incendiary topics were Native Hawaiians, surfing, and social justice.

“He’ll get his.” Keahilani gazed at the ocean. “They always do.”

The bend navigated, Mahina returned to digging through her purse. “Damn it. Where did I put those cigarettes?” She glanced down and shoved half of the contents aside.

Smoking was her one vice—the single luxury she allowed herself. She only smoked two cigarettes a day, always out of sight from Bane, so Keahilani tried not to nag her too much about it. Mahina said she felt guilty for spending an extra seven bucks every week and a half on cancer sticks, but Keahilani was more concerned about her health than a few lost dollars.

Another curve snuck up on them like a rogue wave out of nowhere, and a motorcycle breached the double yellow lines, heading straight for them.

Fear punched her in the gut, and Keahilani slapped a hand to the dashboard.

“Mahina!” Kai’s shout from the backseat struck a perfect chord with Keahilani’s cry.

“Shit!” Their mother yanked the steering wheel, avoiding the motorcycle, but the car careened across pavement, tires screaming in protest.

Keahilani clutched her seat, and the world slowed to a dreadful, slow-motion panorama. Reality spun into blurred brown lines intermingled with blood-curdling, rubber-ripping howls that danced around her head like little cartoon birds. Her body succumbed to laws of physics she couldn’t break as it thrashed against the belt crossing her chest. Bones protested at the impact.

Twirl. Skid. SLAM!

The dreamlike scene ended abruptly. A bloody wake-up call infused with a double shot of delayed reaction lit up her pain receptors. Deadly silence, save for a hissing radiator, commanded the airwaves.

Keahilani tried to unbuckle herself, but her arm wouldn’t cooperate. It was stuck between the seat and the door. Dazed, she turned toward Mahina and wished she hadn’t.

Red. Not on her lips where it should be, but trickling down her temple. Saturating her light shirt. Pooling on the seat. The crumpled door embedded her side as if it were made of cardboard rather than steel. Red-dipped glass fragments lay shattered in a macabre butterfly shape on her lap.

A chill alighted on Keahilani’s skin, soft like a blanket at first, but then it seeped in, a sinister terror, seizing her whole body.

“Mahina?” Keahilani whispered, afraid that if she spoke too loudly, she might somehow break her mother further. Heart shuffling into a gallop, she couldn’t catch her breath. Couldn’t catch her racing thoughts as they sped away, leaving her control high and dry. Sanity whirled into a vortex, and adrenaline-powered fear clamped around her throat. “Makuahine?” she said more forcefully.

Kai groaned behind Mahina and lifted his head from his tipped-over position in the seat. He’d avoided the impact when the door caved in. Thank God.

A quiet rattle nabbed Keahilani’s attention. Dread anchored to her gut, and gravity dragged it down. No. No. No. Mahina would be okay. She had to be.

She wrestled the door and with great effort, wriggled her sore arm free and scrambled for the seatbelt. Mahina’s chest crested with another rattle.

Mahina … oh God, Mahina … Her pulse increased to an impossible speed, flooding her ears with wild thumps, goading her into action. The belt sprung loose, and Keahilani’s hands flew to her mother, who was such a horrific mess, she didn’t even know where to start.

Flag someone down for help. You can’t fix this yourself.

“Makuahine?” The high pitch of Kai’s normally low voice startled her.

Keahilani yanked the door handle and shouldered it open. The grisly rattling spurring her on, she stumbled out of the car. Searing pain shot down her leg. She caught herself before face-planting on the pavement and limped into the road.

The asshole on the bike that almost hit them was long gone, but a car headed their way. She waved her good arm in an exaggerated arc. Eyes wide, the driver slammed into park and pulled out a cell phone. “I’ll get help.” Keahilani nodded her thanks. She awkwardly galloped back to her ‘ohana.

Kai tumbled out of the backseat, wincing, eyes watering, brows knitted together in a tight weave of physical and emotional agony. A furious bruise bloomed on his cheek. “She’s gonna die.” His voice cracked. “Mahina’s gonna die.”

Keahilani ignored him and rounded the car to the driver’s side. Avoiding the bloodied bag of flesh trapped in the seat, she studied the accordion of metal and gave it a gentle tug. Nothing happened. She grasped the panel with one hand, the handle with the other, and put all of her might into pulling it open. Kai appeared beside her, sniffling, shoulders heaving. Barely controlled panic rolled off him. With his help, she managed to budge the door open. Mahina jerked as the air hit her, and blood flooded out of her side in a rush.

Kai tugged his shirt over his head and stuffed it into the wound. He smoothed Mahina’s wet hair. “Makuahine. Makuahine, can you hear me?” The sudden calmness in his tenor frightened Keahilani more than the blood did. Her brother was right. Mahina—her mother, her sister, her best friend—was going to die.

A lump clogged Keahilani’s throat, but the approach of a wailing siren didn’t give her time to grieve. Kai knelt beside their mom until the paramedics barreled up with a gurney and took over.

The ensuing moments were yet another blur in the blizzard of unbelievable events. Someone asked if she was okay. They helped her to the side of the road and checked out her and Kai. Red and white lights whirred. Urgent voices chattered. A line of cars backed up the highway. Dazed, Keahilani followed when a paramedic guided her into the back of the ambulance with Kai and the bundle of splintered pieces that used to be their mother.

Doors slammed behind them, locking her into a wheeled mausoleum. She couldn’t do this. She couldn’t be trapped in there with her mother as she died. Panic tore through her, weakening and electrifying all at once.

The engine roared, the siren shrieked, and tires spun.

No, no, no. This couldn’t be happening.

“I’m dying,” Mahina whispered on a shallow current of air. The garbled words blended with what Keahilani feared was blood filling her mother’s punctured lung. They were almost a plea. Whether for relief, a merciful end, or escape, Keahilani wasn’t sure, but she felt as if she was the one who’d been crushed by the door.

Clutching the crisp white sheet on the gurney, Mahina tensed and arched her back. More blood seeped through the bandages the EMT slapped over her abdomen. God, so much blood. The horrible rattling inside her chest picked up. Thick creases of anguish and fear marred her unusually pale face, gobbling up her ha, her very breath.

“Be still, Mahina.” Trembling hand squeezing her mother’s, Keahilani shot her gaze out the ambulance window. Not too far from the hospital, but the way things were going, it might not matter.

Her mother could not die. Could not.

“Makuahine, you gotta stay awake. Let me know you’re still with me.” Keahilani kissed her mother’s clammy cheek. Forbidden droplets poised at the corners of her lids. A fresh rush of adrenaline surged and prevented those damned tears from falling. She had to be strong for Mahina. And for Kai.

She glanced to her twin in the seat beside her, head stuffed in his tanned, shaking hands. Damp brown waves of hair framed his thumb and fingers. The unbearable siren stifled what must have been chokes issuing through his dry lips.

“The doctors will help you.” Keahilani didn’t believe the words any more than her mother or Kai did. Even if her mom had a chance, the family had no insurance. Odds of getting quality treatment were nil. The haole doctors were interested in paying patients, not “moochers” off their precious system. If you couldn’t help them cover their golf expenses at the country club or the mortgage on their multimillion-dollar suites at the tourist-dominated condominiums, they’d provide only the most basic services because they had to. People like Mahina were nothing more than quickly forgotten chores marked off over-filled to-do lists.

Keahilani clutched her mother’s hand tighter and wiped her nose on a lifted shoulder. Another deep rumble of fluid inside Mahina’s chest fought for control of a space designed only for air. Mahina’s body rose from the gurney again. She emerged gasping, nails digging into Keahilani’s flesh. With a glut of super strength, her mother commandeered Keahilani’s T-shirt, balling the thin, faded cotton. Her bloodshot brown eyes widened, and frightening acceptance dawned over them. She swallowed a couple times in quick succession, her gulps like those of a fish left on a dock to die.

“My garden. You must protect my garden. You know where it is, huh? You remember?” Her words transformed from desperate pleas into unyielding demands.

Keahilani nodded. “I remember. But I won’t need to tend to your plants. You’ll be here to do it,” she lied.

Somehow Mahina’s eyes popped even wider, and her grip became painful. Heated droplets pooled in Keahilani’s palm. Blood.

“No. Death hunted me for years, and now he’s found me. My secrets—our secrets—lie near Kula within the slopes of Haleakalā.” Her brows wrenched together. “Protect them.”

Why would Mahina care about her stupid plants at a time like this?

“Keahilani!” She tried to sit up, but the straps across her chest stopped her. “Promise me!”

“I promise.” Keahilani pressed her lips together to keep the emotion at bay, but an eruption was overdue. Boiling sorrow welled from deep within, tainted by the injustice of her mother’s situation. Waves of regret rolled off Kai beside her, clashing with the whiff of death surrounding Mahina. The combined stench overwhelmed her, suffocated her, lured the burning lava higher up her gullet. She tried bargaining with the impending explosion. Mahina needs you to remain calm. Don’t upset her. If this is her end, honor her with your silence.

“How much longer?” she demanded of the driver through clenched teeth.

“Three minutes.”

Mahina didn’t have three minutes.

Ironic how fast life could transform into death. One moment, they’d been driving to Lāhainā Harbor to see Bane surf in the groms competition. The next, a freak car crash robbed her not only of her mother’s life, but her entire family’s. If Mahina hadn’t been rifling through her bag for that damned cigarette instead of paying attention to the road, they’d probably be sitting on the beach now, cheering for Bane as he dominated ka po‘ina nalu and showed the haole surfers how it was done.

Keahilani had always feared smoking would kill her mother.

She hated being right.

Mahina’s breaths decreased to mere whispers of garbled air. Her dark eyes lost focus. Her hold on Keahilani loosened.

“Stay with me, Makuahine. Come on. Wake up.” Keahilani tapped her mother’s cheek a couple times. Kai lifted his head, his face streaked with tears. He leaned closer.

“Makuahine.” His voice cracked.

Their mother latched onto Keahilani and Kai in turn. “‘Ohana is everything. The blood is everything…” The words were barely intelligible. The ghost of a smile passed over her parted lips. The gurgle kicked up again with her inhale.

Keahilani held her own breath and counted the seconds.

Five … six … seven …

The word “‘ohana” surfed on the wave of Mahina’s lengthy exhale.

The ambulance driver slammed the brakes and took a sharp right into the emergency entrance at the hospital, jostling the three bodies in back. Two reacted. One didn’t.

Kai shook their mother. Her vacant gaze remained fastened on Keahilani, her final word forever emblazoned in Keahilani’s mind.

‘Ohana.

As shadows converged and undiluted rage consumed her, she channeled the heavenly fire she was named after, pushed it out from her core, and unleashed all of her anger and frustration and sorrow into a vocal eruption. “NO!”

The ambulance windows rattled and sent the petrified EMTs scrambling to cover their ears.

When the last echo of the word died on her lips, the searing heat cooled like lava expelled from the darkest depths, forced to chill in the unyielding harshness of reality. Left with cold blood and too many memories, Keahilani threw herself over her mother’s lifeless body. “No …,” she cried.

Kai’s shaky hand pressed into the small of her back. “We’re alone.” His frame quaking, he nuzzled her shoulder.

‘Ohana was all they had left.

Here are 5 fun facts about HOT-BLOODED:

1. HOT-BLOODED is a cross between Point Break, The Sopranos, and Twin Peaks. So, if you like surfing, gangster-style grit with a side of psychological suspense, this one might be right up your alley.

2. HOT-BLOODED’s heroine, Keahilani Alana, is a Hawaiian surfer chick with skeletons (and some other dark, bump-in-the-night baddies) in her closet. She’s strong-willed, independent, and more than willing to use force to get her point across.

3. The tagline for HOT-BLOODED is “‘Ohana is everything,” and boy is it EVER! ‘Ohana means “family” in Hawaiian, and this book explores the nature of family—good, bad, and deadly—on many levels.

4. It’s set on the lush island of Maui where every color of the rainbow rules—and where terrifying shadows exist in places you least expect them.

5. HOT-BLOODED is loosely connected to Kendall’s JUST BREATHE urban fantasy series. You don’t have to have read those books to enjoy this one, but JUST BREATHE readers who do a little digging may notice some subtle connections. There’s a reason for that. Stick with the ‘Ohana series to find out more! 🙂

review
I have just finished reading this book and seriously feel like I’ve been through the emotional wringer!! I seriously think I’ve gone through every emotion when reading this!  This is the first book by Lisa N Paul i have read and although it is part 3 in the Charistown series I didn’t feel I was missing out on anything as each book is written to be a standalone. Fantastic book and I am eagerly awaiting the next in the series already!!  And whilst I’m waiting i will be devouring books 1&2 ….!
Kyle and Cate are both damaged in their own ways and neither has had it easy at all.  They meet under dreadful circumstances and by a calculated chance they meet again.  Kyle believes Cate saved him and Cate is so damaged she doesn’t believe she deserves to be happy.
In the beginning, it is hard to like Kyle but his journey of self re-discovery is a real treat to be part of! I also warmed to Cate too and her sassy attitude seriously gives Kyle a run for his playboy money!!!  Loved their first few scenes together and you really feel that he has well and truly et his match.  ALthough she is sassy and strong in many ways, for the best part of the book you are left wondering what on earth her past held.  Its not until a long way in to the book that we finally see what she has had to deal with and what has made and shaped her into the person she was before Kyle stepped back into her life.
Kyle soon becomes likeable and pretty swoon worthy too!  He isn’t the stereotypical hot rich book boy friend but someone, aside from his dreadful past, that you can actually imagine in real life.
One of the most heartwarming sides to this story for me is the inclusion of the many side characters in the book who form part of a wider family for both of our main characters.  Each of them is special in their own way and I particularly love the dymanic between Cate and Elliott.  It makes for some heartwarming moments but Elliott and her “flashbacks” also add different spin on the story too!
I loved this book and I will definitely be reading more form this author very soon!
5 super stars

BLOG TOUR and 5* REVIEW Breaking Free by Alexis Noelle

HollysBook

SYNOPSIS

Holly James is trying to move on with her life, but it’s not easy. She can’t stand to be touched by anyone, not even her own family. She is a lost broken shell of the person that she used to be. She realizes that shutting everyone out is much easier then opening up and letting someone hurt her.

Drew Walker is no prince charming. He doesn’t care about anyone but himself and has no intention of changing. He loves the life of excitement and entitlement that comes with being the lead singer of a band, and has no plans to get tied down anytime soon.

When these two meet there is an immediate chemistry. The thing that surprises Holly is that she can tolerate his touch. He makes her feel like herself once again and gives her the freedom and comfort she has been desperate to find. On the other hand he is self-centered, egotistical, and everything that she should stay away from.

What happens when the one person who can save you might also be the person who can break you?

“There was something about Drew, but I had no idea what it was. He was self-centered, cocky, and definitely not prince charming. Maybe that’s why I liked him though. Maybe I didn’t want to be saved by the handsome prince. Maybe I wanted to be corrupted by the evil king.”

**Breaking Free is for mature audiences only—strong language, and explicit sexual content are apparent.**

review

OMG I LOVED this book! It was one of those books that you need to make sure you clear your schedule for because you will not be able to put this down!! And Drew…… well lets just say I NEED MORE!! He’s such an arrogate arse but you can’t help liking him!

The basis of the story is Holly, the female lead, who has a lot of crap she’s dealing with and has a real hatred of with people touching her. She craves normality and you get a deep sense of her desperation to be her old self. Then she meets Drew, the lead singer of a popular band and immediately the sexual chemistry is ignited and surprisingly for her, she is able to tolerate him touching her.

The roller coaster ride that this book takes you on will have you laughing, crying, getting frustrated but also getting a little hot under the collar with the sexual chemistry between the main characters. I love the writing style too and felt within a few short pages so drawn into the story. Drew sees the sadness in Holly and although he has man sized issues of his own, he wants to help her. Her issues cause problems of their own and her anxiety is dreadful at points, scaring Drew as well as you the reader too. Drew needs help as much as Holly but in different ways and you do feel that at times things are just not going to work out and that the issues they both have are just too much but you end up rooting for them too.

There is an array of supporting characters all of whom develop the story well and add depth to the leading characters too. I seriously felt for Carter, Holly’s brother, too!

I want to and could seriously go on for hours about this book but I don’t ant to spoil it for anyone wanting to read it! It is a fantastic stand alone and although a reasonably speedy yet really involved read. I’d love to hear a bit more about Drew though and his history. I will definitely be reading more by Alexis and highly recommend this to you!

review

First off I seriously just have to say what a freaking cute couple Rhett and Kaden make!  I love MM romances but although this wasn’t a romance per se, the rapport you find between this married couple just totally made me melt!!  Rhett is the daredevil, live life to the limits Pilot and second in command at his family’s charter airline business and Kaden is an addiction nurse with a huge heart and caring nature.  They are happily married and seeming to be totally happy with their lot in life.  Even the introduction of Lassie into their lives and Rhett’s reluctance to his arrival is cute!

And add to that beautiful relationship, Pop, Rhett’s savior and grandfather and basically the only sane and steady thing in his life!  Rhett and Pop run the charter airline business and we start the story by Rhett being asked to see his Grandfather who basically hands him the reins to the business and along with it his own secret relationship with the FBI.  This is where the plot thickens and the story gets really interesting!!!

This intrigue and the twists and turns in this book had me gripped.  Who can anyone trust and who is behind the mess that very quickly unravels? The introduction of Rhett’s pugnacious mother and major problem of a father (or Sperm Donor as he is referred to throughout the book) adds a huge darker dimension to the plot too!

I loved the character development in the story and particularly loved the Kaden/Rhett dynamic as well as Pop and his cantankerous attitude and his sly secrets too! The flash backs that you get from Rhett to his childhood and especially in relation to a particular scene with a box of condoms had me in stitches at times but also cemented in my head the amazing relationship that he shares with him.

This book started out quite light but the path that the story took was nothing like I had expected and I loved it. The suspense had me hooked from the start!  And the ending – NEVER saw that coming!

I really enjoyed this story and will definitely be looking at more from this author!!

5 refreshingly different stars!

The wind assaulted Rhett O’Neil’s torso as he drove down Highway 495 on his motorcycle. He had every intention of heading straight home after landing his plane “Betsy,” but when he checked his phone, he found a message from his grandfather asking him to make a quick trip to the estate. What Pop wanted, he got. Rhett hoped they kept it short, because after a week away he would much prefer to make it home for dinner with his husband, who… Shit! I forgot to call Kaden. Before he could correct this grievous error, his phone rang through his Bluetooth helmet. He answered, “I love you.”

Kaden released a breath resonating with relief and exasperation. “Sure you do. I thought you’d be waiting for me after my shift. Isn’t that what we discussed forty-five minutes ago when you finished screwing around with Betsy?”
Rhett laughed. “Checking a faulty engine blade is far from screwing Betsy.”
“You made that unnecessarily dirty.” But Kaden laughed, too, so Rhett concluded it was very necessary.
When their laughs turned to chuckles, Rhett said, “I should have let you know Pop asked me to stop by for something quick. I’m not sure what, though.”
“Please don’t tell him about the engine blade, Rhett. I’d like to see you sometime before my next shift,” Kaden said. He worked as a nurse from seven a.m. to three p.m. at the drug rehab floor of the local hospital.
“Stop. We’re not going to talk all night. Believe me when I tell you, I’d rather be home without clothes on, eating the dinner you promised.”
Kaden quieted on the other end.
“You are making dinner, right?” Rhett clarified.
“Roast beef has been cooking in the crock pot all day. But, see, we’d have to eat it upstairs if you planned to be naked.” Kaden’s voice now held an element of concern.
“Why?” Rhett asked.
“I’ll tell you when you aren’t driving. Be careful on that death trap.”
Rhett never understood why his motorcycle was a death trap, but Betsy provided perfectly acceptable transportation. And then he heard a shriek in the background. “What is that?”
“Lassie,” he answered, concern turned to defeat.
“Doesn’t sound like a dog.”
“It’s a cat. We talked about this. We agreed a cat would be an acceptable pet for our lifestyle,” Kaden reminded him.
Flicking on the blinker, Rhett turned off the exit. He had said that, but he didn’t expect Kaden to go out and get a cat while he was away. “Why did you name it Lassie?”
“Her. And that was her name for the first six months of her life.”
“Fair enough. I’m here, and I won’t stay long. Then you can explain why we have to confine nudity to the bedroom like teenagers,” Rhett said as he leaned over and punched in the security code to open the gate to his grandfather’s estate.
“Tell him I’m making dinner. He’s very concerned about your nutritional intake.”
Rhett drove around the maze that led to the main house. “Yes, but he might invite himself over if I tell him what you’re making.”
“Not if you mention Lassie. I love you. Please call me before you sit on that bike.” Kaden hung up without leaving space for Rhett to protest.
He shook his head and removed his helmet as he dismounted the motorcycle. Rhett paused to stroke the sleek paint job on his red Kawasaki. He didn’t care what Kaden thought, Rhett relished the thrill of riding. Kaden had seen too many fatalities from motorcycle accidents during his ER rotation in nursing school to feel the same. So maybe he did understand, but the peace on the issue was hard-won. Rhett tucked his helmet into the compartment under the seat and strode up to the house. The door swung open and Rhett smiled at Martha, his grandfather’s long-time household manager. “Heard the muffler?” he asked, taking off his coat and handing it to her.
“Your grandfather did. He’s in his study. I left snacks in there for you two.”
Rhett kissed her cheek. “Thank you.” He made his way through the expansive rooms decorated with the best art money could buy. A modern painting stopped him in his tracks. The splash of color and uneven lines contrasted with everything else in house. Rhett dashed to the study, knocked once and opened the slightly ajar door. “Are you going insane, Pop?”
Donald Everett O’Neil sat up, raised his eyebrow and grinned. “Unfortunately, not yet.” He gestured Rhett into the study, which was covered by model planes and pictures of his grandfather posing with the greats of aviation. Rhett was included in quite a few of those, as well. Yet in every one, he stared admiringly at his grandfather, as opposed to the celebrity sharing the shot.
“Unfortunately?” Rhett asked.
“Yes, Everett, sanity can be so taxing in one’s old age. I believe dementia is a self-defense mechanism so we aren’t forced to watch history repeat itself again, while no one heeds our warning,” his grandfather said. “How’d the flight go?”
Rhett shrugged. “No real problems. I’m sure you checked the stats before asking, so you’re well aware.”
Don’s laugh turned to a cough, which he calmed with a few sips of water. “Don’t smoke.”
“You can stop, you know.”
“And you can get rid of the bike, but we all have our vices. I’m old. I deserve to keep mine until it kills me.” Don removed his reading glasses and sat back in his chair. “Which is sort of what I wanted to talk to you about.”
“Smoking?”
“No. Dying.”
Rhett’s jaw dropped and his forehead moistened. “You’re… What’s wrong?”
Don waved him off. “Nothing’s wrong. Not that I know of, anyway. I am sixty-four, and don’t intend to live forever. Actually, I would love to die before asshole politicians run this country further into the ground. But not yet.”
“Pop,” Rhett started, raising his hand, “can you please get to the point?” He loved his grandfather, but he could not handle a rant about the government today.
“When did you get so impatient?”
“I have dinner and a husband at home waiting for me,” he answered.
“Your marriage is good then? You take care of each other?”
Rhett blinked, trying to follow the train of thought. His grandfather, while always supportive, never pried into his love life. “Yes.”
Don nodded. “I knew you would when you first brought him home.” The man’s voice had faded out again as he met Rhett’s eyes. “Your family is the most important ingredient of a happy life. I’m ensuring you have that before we continue this conversation. So, one more time, do you and Kaden have a strong relationship?”
“Yes.”
“That’s what I thought.” Don slid a paper across the desk to Rhett. “What I’m discussing will not make your mother happy. You need to be prepared for that.”
“Yeah, well, she made her choices.” Like to move to California with her husband after they released the asshole from prison. Rhett, at fifteen, had refused to move with them, and Pop adopted him. One of the best days of Rhett’s life was when he took his grandfather’s last name, shedding the otherwise permanent tie to the man who donated his sperm to fertilize his mother’s egg.
Don sighed again. “I wish you’d make peace with her.”
“I have. Mom and I are fine as long as she doesn’t reference the donor. If I don’t have to hear about him, I can pretend she divorced him like she should have. Now, Pop, what isn’t going to make her happy?” Rhett tried to keep his exasperation at bay as he picked at the hummus and pita bread.
“I will get there.”
Thought you wanted to die before the politicians ruined the country? Rhett nodded instead of voicing his thoughts. He’d have to find a way to make the delay up to Kaden later.
“You’re doing a fantastic job with taking on a leadership role in the company. I can tell you love it.”
The corners of Rhett’s mouth lifted. “You knew I would. I’ve worked for you since I was twelve.”
“I knew you loved flying, but that isn’t the same as leading. You’ve gained respect by taking responsibility of all parts of the business,” Don continued.
“That’s how you make sure it’s done right,” Rhett repeated the words his grandfather had told him throughout his childhood.
Don nodded again, wearing a smile of his own. “Everett, there’s something that I haven’t shared with you yet. The company does more than provide flights to wealthy people. We also work with the FBI.”
Rhett snapped his gaze back to his grandfather’s. “You do what? Aren’t they the same people ruining your beloved country?”
“No, I refuse to do business with stupid people. The company assists the rescue division of the FBI, particularly human trafficking cases,” Don said.
“Human trafficking, like the sex trade?”
“Yes, to put it broadly, the FBI tracks cases of girls and young women who go missing. This unfortunately happens every day, but the government pays special attention when the missing girls are of a lower socio-economic class and when the disappearances occur in the same geographic area,” he explained. “They’ve currently zoomed in on several larger organizations. The missions are to apprehend the traffickers and rescue the girls.”
“Are you qualified to help with that?” Rhett asked.
“I’m qualified to fly a plane and keep my mouth shut. The FBI has grown to rely on me, but the truth is I’m not as young as I used to be. Is this something you would be willing to do occasionally?”
Though not sure exactly what he was agreeing to, Rhett nodded.
“Perfect. Now for the part that’ll make your mother unhappy. I’m retiring, and I would like to give you part of your inheritance early, which means in the next few weeks I’ll draw up the paperwork so you and I will share all the assets of the company, in addition to about twenty-five percent of the money I have set aside for you.”
“Thank you, but… why?” Rhett’s head spun at the thought. His grandfather had already provided him with a trust fund that he used to put himself through school and buy Betsy. He finally glanced down at the paper, which detailed the money he would receive and the legalities of the co-ownership.
“Because you’re responsible. I trust you and I’d like to keep the wealth, especially the business, in the family.” His grandfather handed him a signed check, then stood and embraced his grandson. “Be careful on the road.”
After thanking him again, Rhett sent a text to Kaden, ‘Sorry that took so long, but trust me, it was worth it.’

Excerpt for Very Wicked Things

Book #2 of the Briarcrest Academy Series

by Ilsa Madden-Mills

I got out of the shower and dressed hurriedly, anxious to get back to Cuba.

The door opened, and like he did it every single day, he stepped inside the steamy bathroom.

“Think I need a shower, too,” he said, his fingers easing off his football practice shirt.

What? Now?

Trying to play it cool and failing miserably, I moved my eyes off his naked chest and checked out his track pants and the obvious bulge he sported.

Oh. Did his lower body match the rest of him? Was it all sinewy muscle and big?

Just, yeah. That thought got stuck in my head and went round and round.

“You staying?” he asked, a grin working his face. Pleased at my open admiration, probably.

“No,” I said, but made no move to go. ‘Cause I had no shame when it came to catching a glimpse of his muscular body.

“Good,” he said, his smile broadening.

He pivoted to turn on the shower, and my eyes betrayed me again, admiring the muscles in his back, checking out how they twitched and rippled when he moved. Football and rowing had been good to him. My fingers itched to know how they’d feel underneath my hands. Which was stupid because we had nothing in common. Not a rich Highland Park boy and a poor girl from Ratcliffe.

And most importantly, he was a player, not to be trusted.

He hooked his thumbs into his pants, paused a moment—maybe waiting to see if I’d run from the room?—but when I didn’t budge, he slid them and his underwear off. My mouth opened. Cuba Hudson, the most popular guy at Briarcrest was standing right in front of me, naked and beautiful. And like the cocky bastard he was, he posed for me, his big-ass biceps and chiseled abs making me vibrate all over. Need for him slammed into me.

Did I say he was hot?

Well, I was wrong.

He was off-the-charts, no-holds-barred, freaking going make-me-lose-my-mind-right-there delicious. The ultimate man-candy, the kind I knew to stay away from, yet here I was, ogling him.

“Still leaving?” he asked huskily.

“Any minute,” I said in a weak voice, backing up to the wall and propping myself up. “Just chillin’. Shower wore me out. I might need to hold this wall up for a sec.”

“I want you to stay,” he said, eyes at half-mast, glowing with heat.

“Why?” I said, aching to touch him. But that was crazy. I was a virgin, and I didn’t know jack about touching a guy’s you-know-what.

“Look at me, Dovey.”

I tore my eyes from his manhood, blushing.

His eyes burned. “There’s a sense of urgency in my head. Like our time is limited.”

I nodded. Yeah, same here.

“And, I’ll be honest, I don’t want to rush you, but I’m dying to sink into you. I want to set you on fire with need for me.” He ghosted his hands over the steel rod between his legs. Once, twice, and—holy shizzle, he didn’t stop.

My chest rose faster and faster, and I tried to chill-out, but I couldn’t.

He lowered his voice. “Kiss me again, Dovey.”

Oh. “That’s a terrible idea, Cuba. Cause you’re naked, and I’m turned on because you’re naked. And you’re touching yourself. And you’re naked.” I sucked in a sharp breath. “Not a good combo. Odds are we’ll end up in that shower together or back in your bed doing the double-backed monster.”

“Then join me in the shower. I’ll be good. For you.” He arched his back, his hands still doing that back and forth that was driving me insane.

Liar, liar, pants on fire, I thought. No way he would he be good.

Because he was the Heartbreaker of Briarcrest Academy.

And one wicked boy.
